Hi there.. Yes they are bought by the size of the area you need to heat... We lived in the Shetland isles.for 5 years, and was an old craft house. And mostly to heat the hole house.. When it was hot,, it was hit and such a warm and welcoming feature on our most chilly and windy days... But the things is it can also be hard work.. Maybe not as much if you are in a warmer area. We could freely get pallets which helped immensely... And we tried to remove as many nails as we could see.. Otherwise these got caught in the grate at the bottom... But I would still say hard work . We got coal about £10 a bag, peat was the best for heat, but that started to get a little dearer to. All in all we paid about £2500 with the fire and fitting. About 3 years ago now. Didn't regret it at all. But would think twice about having one now.. I ain't getting any younger..

The brickwork for the current TV stand is tied into the chimney, removing it would need some remedial work which will be noticeable. The salvaged bricks from removing the TV stand can be used to replace the side bricks in the chimney and to tie them back in. Once the TV cabinet is removed I doubt there would be neat brickwork behind it. It would really need the alcoves plasterboarding and skimming then which seems a shame. Brickwork can be saved on the chimney if fitting an inset stove into the existing builders opening. If wanting to open it up the only way would be to cut down the bond in the bricks and open it up. There would be a fair bit of work in it to make it look neat and finished. Without seeing it though it is hard to give 100% accurate advice.

Thanks very much Math for your comments. Firstly there will be no tv unit in here to worry about...we have a separate snug/ family room. Yes furniture placement is not exact on this pic - I just popped a few sofas in to give the effect!! Our house is surrounded by fields and lovely views especially the side with the bifolds so we wanted as many windows as possible to appreciate that. But I do quite see that we will end up with having sofas in front of the LH window wall. Partly why I thought of adding the built in window seats to add extra seating when required without taking up more useable wall space. As it is fairly wide I'm hoping that pulling the sofas in from the wall will mean it won't look too odd. I think it makes sense to have the fire on the far wall if we can as otherwise we will kind of have two focal points with the windows/ bifolds and then the fire. Unless we put the fire in the corner where you have put the unit? Saw quite a cool one on here last night ... The issue is if we put a wood burner on that end wall how high the flue would have to be and would it look weird if you could see it through the lantern roof? Also what special things would we have to do at the build stage to comply with heat regs etc?

Hi Jenny, I think i'm there with the description. The new windows and doors are going on the left, correct? I can see in the back ground the slanted ceiling. However, i'm still confused with the T.V comment, as you say you don't want it facing the windows and that's what it currently does. There is also a radiator on the far wall under a window, is that to remain or be re-sited? If you replace the long wall with windows and doors, you would need to say where they are exactly and how wide. The radiator could do with be re-sited and in my opinion maybe get rid of the window on the far wall. If you don't get rid of the window you are limiting yourself greatly with the placement of furniture. Here's a few scenarios:- keeping the window and the radiator:- Removing the window and re-siting the radiator to the other end of the room - log burner on left in tall corner:- Removing the window - log burner on the right - tv facing in to the room away from the window:- Log burner not in either corner - window removed - fireplace built for log burner with alcoves allowing storage and T.V Corner placement:- This would probably allow more seating - possibly a 3 and a 2 seater sofa. Radiator re-sited to the far end adjacent to the door.
