As someone who taught Textile design on a degree course (before retirement) and prior to that worked in a famous national gallery, I have extremely eclectic taste. I have work painted by myself, work collected from other artists, limited edition prints, framed ephemera, and even two very large antique Victorian watercolors in gold frames - which I wouldn't probably buy these day, but do provide a bit of "weight" and gravitas in rooms. I like to put them against ultra modern lighting and pieces of furniture to give a bit of edge and conversely, put modern art against a couple of pieces of antique furniture we have.

If there are floorboards, you could paint those white (or leave them in their natural colour) to achieve the kind of pared back look in the photo you've attached.

I had a play around with a few options and please bear in mind there are no dimensions, so you'd have to view it as a sort of artists impression. I take on board the first idea, but i feel the placement of furniture for the living area could be awkward with no walls that really fit the bill for sofas, t.v placement etc. This would be a good tweak on that plan.An alternative might be this:- You won't be facing the Kitchen whilst relaxing and watching T.V. You get an area next to the kitchen to eat week day dinners and a formal dining room that's easy to walk to from the kitchen. Whatever you decide, it's well worth employing a professional planner that can blow the plans up in 3d and let you visually walk around the space. Think about furniture placement and what you want in there.
