Need help updating this tired living room
Comments (13)Hi. I agree with angieav, but I think you need to tell us how you use the space so we can help with the best layout. Do you use the dining table every day or do you eat in the kitchen? Does the electronic piano get used a lot? Is the woodburner for heat, looks, you've always wanted one, or just because you think you need a focal point for the room? Is there a restriction on where it would be (do you have a second storey above some of that room)? That said, I would make the sloping wall the focal point with built in shelves, including a slot for the TV, and have it in a contrasting colour with books and nice decorative items. Because it is angled, you can then see the TV from much of the room without it being a big feature. You could have a couch square on to the entrance to the room, maybe an L with the short end against the wall where the TV currently is, a chair or two between the two windows and where the other couch is at the moment, but without sticking out so much (it looks like that couch blocks the traffic to the kitchen, but it might just be the angle of the photos). A dining table can go where you currently have yours, but I would flip it around so that it is long in that space and that is a dedicated dining area. Or have a round one that extends so for everyday it isn't encroaching on the space and traffic to the kitchen. The piano can go over near the door to the outside. A woodburner could be installed where you currently have your TV (as long as the flue has somewhere to go!). With this layout, the seating will be facing the woodburner and the TV. If you don't use the dining table much, you could put it over on the carpeted area, as someone else suggested, and dedicate the part that currently has tiles to the lounge (and then we can rethink the layout of that area). As for the flooring, I would go with what you have in the kitchen so that it flows. I hope that helps to get you started....See MoreI have use updated my living room and need help with colours
Comments (2)You have used grey as a neutral, and it is a backdrop for your co-ordinating black and white photos. It is perfectly fine to stick to this neutral palette without adding any colour, but if you do want to add colour, then the brighter the better. A mustard yellow, an acid green, a raspberry pink or a plum would look good, as would a strong teal. If you want to use primary colours then use them sparingly to avoid it looking like a child's playroom! Perhaps have the print and then pick up one if the colours in a few accessories, but don't go overboard with it. Primary colours can be very jarring to the eye....See MoreNeed Help with Living Room/ Dining Room
Comments (9)A Roman blind is a good idea or curtains that hang outside of the window recess when open to allow maximum light to pour in. Whichever you choose, make sure they are hung high near the ceiling to make the ceiling feel higher up. What do you use the conservatory for? Is the door in the second photo the main entrance into the room? Would the table fit comfortably nearer the window end of the room instead? Then the sofa could go to the other end of the space - not sure if it fits. It's hard to see how the layout works from the photos and without the measurements or a floor plan. Alternatively, would the sofa fit it you turned it so that it faces the centre of the room rather than the window? I'd hang the seaweed mirror above the sideboard or behind the sofa (depending on final layout) and change the floor lamp to one which reaches over into the living space. Also, you need a much larger rug for the living space. The mirror and art are hung too high at the moment. After the layout is decided then you can think about maybe using wallpaper on one wall. Comments (3)Hi Catherine, could you provide some photos of the room or a simple hand drawing with dimensions of the room and furniture sizes? Without it, it's near impossible to advise anything....See More- 11 years ago
