I would always recommend using insulating boards, otherwise you are wasting money trying to heat the substrate as well as the tiles. What type of floor do you currently have?

You can buy marmox boards between 5-6mm so very little addition to the overall height, very easy to lay and will make the under floor much more efficient.

Also recommend using Warm up as the actual heat matting is very thin.

I want to insulate a concrete floor which is already tiled. The existing tiles are going to be replaced. What is the best way to do this?

Hi, if you are going to remove the existing tiles, strip it back to bare concrete, and for a cheap solution, Google ambient underfloor heating, and then choose from the Blueboard insulation they sell. Think they do a 5-6mm board which is perfect for insulation of concrete floors. This needs to be tuck down with tile adhesive. Don't forget to use flexible tile adhesive for your tiles. Hope this helps.

I also thought about underfloor heating for our kitchen. Our builder did say we might end up with a small step to the doorway which I do not want. Then he mentioned plinth heaters which I'm going for. These sound great and can be switched on and the vent will softly pump out warm air or you can have these water connected to your gas central heating and control the thermostat on them. Our kitchen is so cold now so this appeals to us to take the edge of the cold off the kitchen.
