Hi Alant1000, An extractor not only helps to remove odours from cooking but it also makes cleaning the kitchen easier, removing some of the grease that would otherwise settle throughout the room. Extractors do however come in many shapes and sizes, in terms of aesthetics you could opt for a pendant extractor which appears as a pendant light or you could choose a downdraft extractor, which will be hidden within the worktop. It's difficult to give you a definitive answer but we certainly design all our clients' kitchens with appropriate extraction. Downdraft extractors are not as efficient as those above as they extract the air below most saucepans. Have you thought about something ceiling mounted?

I agree with rinq that the efficiency of the motor is essential. I came across just a few hood manufacturers who can afford to say their extractor will work with any distance from the hob and they are naturally the most expensive. I must mention Gutmann as one of them. And of course, what I've learnt the ceiling extractor doesn't have to absorb all the smell and vapor immediately but if you put it on before starting cooking and leave it on for example 30 min later, it will clean the air well enough.

extraction comes under part F of building regs, so your architect should be detailing this in the plans for the extension. As i understand part F the important bit is Part F When inserting or removing an internal wall, care should be taken not to make ventilation worse. Any new kitchen, a toilet with no openable window; a bath/shower room or utility room should be provided with a mechanical extract fan. The type of room will determine how much ventilation is required. Part F says that where a kitchen previously had only a recirculating fan this can be retained/replaced if it is made no worse. However, I would always recommend fitting an extractor to deal with condensation. • Kitchen: 30l/s if over the hob and 60l/s if placed elsewhere so you could have an expelair type extractor on an external wall that will comply with regs at a minimum.
