The beautiful Distant Drums...
Planted Distant drums bareroots from Edmunds this spring. (healthy, big bareroots, just feel sad that this wonderful online source is gone..) Just amazed at the beauty and the uniqueness of this beautiful buck rose. Light purple and apricot in the same bloom, and fragrant too! Contrary to reports, it has been vigorous and is constantly in bloom so far, and they are first year plants...can only expect wonders as these roses mature...

Comments (77)I have always been attracted to the Carmel-by-the-Sea houses designed by Comstock...the interiors are often decorated casually, with comfy sofas, chairs, maple & cherry furniture and nature-inspired art and accessories. Big fantasy. In real life, we are retired on Cape Cod, Massachusetts and live in a 1200 sq.ft. condo one block off a large town's Main St. and two miles from any beach. The type of staircase with treads that are fixed by way of cantilever (is that the right word?) so they appear to be almost floating. Comments (4)Hi Katherine, It sounds like a great space that can offer a real impact and still be a very cosy and relaxing space. It can be daunting to have such a large space to deal with at first, especially when there are features you don't want to touch. There are lots of different options for the space. I like the idea of opening up the fireplace as it would make a great feature for the room and a place to add a possible seating area for reading but I do agree that if down stairs is electric it is probably closed off. It is a bit of work and a messy job to get it changed. You shouldn't need to worry about planning but will obviously need to abide by building regulations. I think a lot of people place only a large bed and a select few piece of furniture in there types of rooms to draw attention and emphasis the gorgeous period features but there of course things we can do to add additional wardrobes in unobtrusive ways. I would agree to not adding a en-suit as it will unbalance the space. However, it is very hard to tell without any pictures? Would you be able to upload any? DLEverette----Growing good roses doesn't need to be hard. It all starts with the soil. If the roots of your rose are big, healthy and happy, most of the battle is won. I use strictly Sta-Green Flower and Veggy soil. Trust me, the roses love it. Most (99%) of my large roses are on an under stock (multiflora, Dr Huey and Fortuniana). All three under stocks do great in my location. My Distant Drums is on Dr Huey. Over the years I have tried every type of feeding you could think of. I've settled for simplicity with great results.
Once a month, starting April 1st, I apply about 3/4 of a cup of 10-10-10 around each bush until Labor Day. The first of March I throw down a shovel full of Black Kow on each bush and apply Beaty's Liquid Seaweed on each bush and water it in. The 3rd week of September I apply Fish Emulsion. I spray my roses every two weeks with Bayers Rose and Shrub Disease Control. During July I switch over to Honor Guard for two applications, then back to Bayers. Everything stays clean and my roses are happy all growing season.
