I am just completing a loft conversion which will add a double bedroom, ensuite bathroom and walk in wardrobe/closet. The walk in wardrobe is large enough to be a future bedroom if required (it measures 2.3m x 5m) so I would like to put in a lighting solution which could suit both scenarios.

The issue I have is it has a sloping ceiling throughout much of the space which I have tried to illustrate with the sketch. There is a small section of flat ceiling.

Can you recommend any lighting which would fit well in this space? I am not too keen on recessed spot lights and these would pose a problem with insulation on the sloping section of ceiling. Any experience of hanging pendant lights off a sloping ceiling? Would wall lights be a good idea?

This is a great website and interior design resource. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Put up two large mirrors (200x120cm) on each side of the door and add long vertical lights to each sides of these mirrors. A few examples:

The classic dressing room style:

It would lit up the room rather well and also provide good even lighting when getting dressed.

Do you have a ceiling window in this room? Having mirrors opposite the window would also reflect the daylight in the room.

Here's a suggestion from Houzz Facebook Fan Fad Madmartigan: "Hanging lights on the sloping ceiling would look awesome especially if the lights are all leveled at the bottom. I find that this would is one of the way to lessen the sloping ceiling sight and gives it balance."

Hi Carolina I have these floor tiles and a similar wall colour, and lots of art. My stair carpet is wool and called taupe. I think it works well. I think any of the 3 samples would look equally good. Darker will show every speck of lint though. I will now try and put a photo on. Forgive me if it doesn't work, for being a technophobe, and forgive me if it does for a messy house. I can only speak from experience of tiles and Karndean. We have two dogs, live in the country, we and the dogs are in and out all day. The dogs both used to slip even on terracotta ( back in the old days), and, i'd be worried about shiny tiles, especially with larger dogs that could slip far more easily and cause themselves damage. The tiles were dark and had to go, as they showed up the dirt. The grout was the biggest problem, as it was easily stained, and just not practical with dogs. We swapped to Karndean around 5/6 years ago and haven't looked back since. It's simply the best, unscratchable, hard wearing, versatile, easily cleaned surface ever. We live in an old cottage and it had to fit in, so we went with Van Gogh, a floorboard effect look, complete with etched woodworm holes! Love it.

I think it will be difficult to find something to match. I could be wrong but, from the photo, it looks like the drive was some kind of crazy paving made up from broken slabs - 2 or 3 different colours (?) which have since weathered & faded. So if you found something similar to replace them, the colour would most likely be brighter. What happened to the parts of the drive that the builder took up?

Humm, I had a similar colour carpet in an old rented flat years ago. It was a hard one to modernise up really but it was just a bedroom and I ended up using raspberry pink and creams which really lifted it. Also a rug over the carpet in the sofa area could draw your eyes to that and the carpet can just act as a background colour. It depends on your tastes really ie as mentioned, a country floral style would work well with the room itself. But, if you have more contemporary taste or prefer brighter colours then you could even go for a vibrant palate on a more tropical floral theme. Introduce neutral charcoal sofa with tropical cushions in deep greens with the same raspberry pinks etc and use lots of leafy plants in the room and artwork.

This is a tough room and I agree with skipping the recessed cans. Sconces flanking the door and 2 pendants on rods meant for angled ceilings flanking the skylight. And then a few table lamps for sure. I have 2 pendants in my sloped kitchen ceiling and love them. If you can't find a pendant with a rod available for a sloped ceiling that you like, then find one one a chain and just hang it, gravity will do the rest. Rejuvenation has rods meant for sloped ceilings though if you're interested. Good luck!

Just be sure you know the degree of the slope. Is it 45 or 52? It makes a huge difference in sloped ceiling kits. Essentially, you can hang anything your heart desires as long as it has a kit that works with a sloped ceiling. I love a chandelier. If your ceiling is extra high, a fan is helpful. You can't go wrong with floor and table lamps to accent and add to your primary lighting source.

I think a monorail lighting system might be a good option here due to its versatility. The monorail can be mounted from the ceiling or wall. Pendant and spot lamps can be added, are interchangable and can be placed according to the lighting needs of the room. If the room remains a closet, any pendant lights can be swapped with directional spot lights to free up overhead space and there would be no need for wall lamps that might take up shelving space. Likewise, if converted to a bedroom, table or accent lamps can be easily added to provide addtional lighting.

Rope lights -- a la theater aisles, but more intense -- are good for 25,000 hrs. Strung along crucial lines could accentuate shape and provide light for dark nooks under shelves where clothes hang. Include a dimmer switch.

I am not sure if it will help you but here is a remodelation I am designing with similarities. I am using halo at the top and pendant chandeliers for dinning and entry lobby. The orientation of the dormer windows is East.

Thank you for sharing your design joaquinquilez, it really does help to visualise what the pendants would look like.

We really like the idea of a coulpe of pendants on the sloping ceiling and then mirrors and wall lights to spread the light around. We can always add additional task lighting in the storage if required but I think there will be plenty of light. I have only been able to find the chandelier style hook pendants in the UK which will be fine, unless anyone can point me at a supplier of an alternative?

Can I ask what software package you used to produce those designs? They look fantastic.

I would add a solar tube (tubular skylight) with an incorporated light (check velux). then the space would have a day and a night light and you get energy credits.

I would suggest a two wire cable system running 18"-24" below the ceiling's point. Or a wall mounted monorail with telescoping heads. Possibly add a few fun fixtures like the metal men, bulbs with wings or a colored glass for either application. If you prefer to keep it cleaner use 4" low voltage recessed cans with an elbow trim. Tilt the trim to where it is flush with the ceiling. If too much glare add a honeycomb louver lens to cut glare.

directional spot lights on monorail would be perfect.... depends on purpose of room.. even LED lighting along wall bottom on lower sloped end side would work as an added attraction..
