Hi there
I would like some advice on the island in my kitchen. As u can see I have a pretty tiny gas stove and an electric stove side by side neither of which are very good!
I would like to get a big gas and hob but then it would take up the whole of one side. Is it a good idea or is it better to have prep space beside the stove?
I do have a lot of counter space so that’s not the issue.

Comments (13)Hi John, I think it's a clever solution you have come up with to allow the play/toy area you wish to be including within the space. As has been mentioned above, I would agree that the bar is on the wrong side as you'd be looking back into the room, away from the view... that said, if you were to open up the downstairs then this could be debatable. Looking at your the second picture you attached, have you considered a t-shape setup... losing the bar area all together? Having two seating areas next to each other won't be your best use of space. Comments (3)I think 1200 is a good clearance- I have 1000 which is fine but they reckon that 1200 is right if you have two people in the space. If you had a smaller island I think the island would look too small so I wouldn’t make the walkways bigger. In addition you currently have a foot hole for the stools that is 2200mm- in my opinion this is more comfortable for 3 stools than four so you certainly don’t want to go smaller. In fact you may want to swap the 300mm units and replace them with end panels. I hope you don’t mind other observations too. To continue the symmetry I think I would centre the range to the wall and island. Perhaps 900mm drawer units each side of the range would fill the space and personally I would rather have drawers there than behind you when cooking. I think I would also swap the extractor hood for something more decorative since it is the only thing you see when sat at the island. For me I also feel that the American Style fridge has had its day in high end projects and I would rather see two integrated appliances. You could have a side by side larder fridge and larder freezer that would have more chiller space than an American Style fridge or you could have 70/30 fridges side by side. You can get a 900(ish) wide integrated fridge freezer too but this is often a more expensive option. For visual interest interest you could fit this wall with a breakfront. Personally I think the island is one place you don’t need symmetry. Personally I would put the prep sink at one end so the prep area is uninterrupted. I would also include a large pull out bin cupboard so you can easily dispose of recycling and food waste. The island also seems like a great place to integrate a microwave rather than having it cluttering a worktop. Lastly I think I would probably add either some wall cabinets or paint the sink wall in the cabinet colour to balance the tall units at the other side of the room....See MoreKitchen island help much appreciated!
Comments (26)A couple of thoughts on the design that may help you replan...... There seems to be very little counter space between your hob and sink, once you set dirty dishes on one side and clean on the other, where will you prep? Perhaps you could put the hob in your island? Or move it or the sink to the other wall? It’s worth considering a change from your wall oven to fitting one (or two) under the counter one. You’ll get back the worktop space, and thus could easily move your fridge next to the pantry. We opted for two full size Neff slide and hide door ovens under our counters , one regular oven, one steam oven, with our hob directly above them and it’s one of the best decisions I made. I have the ergonomic and space benefits of a range cooker, but superior capacity and functionality for my needs. An induction hob not only looks sleeker, but effectively gains you work space too. You can stick a cookbook / chopping board/ etc directly next to your pot while cooking and it will be fine. Karen from One Plan is terrific and will draw you a proper well thought out plan. Alternatively a virtual planning appointment with Ikea will also result in a plan, and unlike Howdens, an actual price, too. Both companies work in standard cm dimensions....a 40cm wide cabinet is a 40cm cabinet is a 40cm cabinet. (One difference is depth and height.... Ikea units are a little bit deeper, and a little bit taller, so they have a little bit more capacity). Hope that helps....See Morekitchen island plug socket help
Comments (4)I have the equivalent of the sensiopod in my island. Couldn’t manage without it. I keep it down when not in use. When it’s down (retracted) you can’t access the power points because there’s not enough space for the plug to be left in the item when it’s pushed down out of sight (if that makes sense). If there was enough space then yes you could leave the plug in and it would still work....See More
