Mounting Ikea Algot system questions

Is there anyone out there who has used the Ikea Algot system for their closets? I went to the closest IKEA last week, and unfortunately, over a course of 8 hours there was not a sales associate who could answer this question about how to mount the Algot system to the wall.

Are the uprights supposed to be mounted directly to the walls, or is the system similar to the Container Store Elfa system, in which the uprights are suspended by the horizontal suspension rail, which is mounted to the studs and walls? The size of the shelves of the Algot system make it so that the uprights cannot be mounted to the studs themselves (24 inches vs. the 18 inch studs in my house). Obviously, for hanging clothes you would want more than an anchor in drywall. The SA's at Ikea seemed to be truly bluffed by my question.

Hi folks. We just installed Algots throughout our whole house. The suspension rail is optional but very helpful. It has a small lip but supports a lot of weight. We followed some youtube advice and drilled additional holes in the suspension rail so they all landed on studs, then hung our verticals from the rail. The Algot system has three widths (15, 23, 32) so not likely that you would hit studs with all your verticals - without the suspension rail you're relying on drywall to hold the system. Having the suspension rail in the studs helped us feel secure.

We followed this basic installation formula:

1. Measure studs, drill extra holes, hang suspension rail.

2. Hang verticals (do not attach to wall), and install shelves at the top and bottom of the system to square everything out.

3. Mark the holes for the verticals, then take everything down and attach anchors.

4. Screw the verticals into the anchors and install your shelves/rails/baskets.

5. Do a dance, you're done! (optional)

That is crazy that the associates could not answer your question. All they needed to do was look at the installation instructions. You can find them online under the product you are interested in. They mount directly to the wall, there is no suspension rail.

Thanks -- I had looked at that particular documentation. However, there is a suspension rail -- it looks like it has the same purpose as the Elfa rail, but on the IKEA website it states that 'The mounting rail helps you hang ALGOT wall uprights evenly and the right distance from each other' and doesn't say anything about it being load bearing.

Lol, Jesse, I had to study that photo AVSinteriors posted forever to figure out what you meant about the tile direction but after I did I do see what you mean. I never thought of it that way but logic states the water would run off the vertical lengths of grout far more successfully than it will the horizontal! I went in the current family bathroom and had a look at the tiling - very interesting. And a plan changer. I'm glad we hadn't gone too far in planning the shower area yet. Well spotted you on that tile, this is the first time I've heard anyone mention that! I love the inset teak mat-floor for the shower area of that wetroom, too.

My kitchen refit starts 3 weeks today but won't be finished until next year when I have decided on the splash backs. This has been a project 2 years in the making due to several builders agreeing to do the work only to never hear from them again & also some very poor service from kitchen shops. Finally I have a builder on board who will move a doorway to accommodate the new position for my fridge freezer and fit a Second Nature kitchen in elm that is to replace an old cream shaker one. Most of the appliances are staying as they are newish but for the first time I will have a dishwasher, a wall mounted oven so I can see what is cooking & a Franke under mounted corner sink which was a brand new ebay bargain. I am switching from gas to a white induction hob that will hopefully fit seamlessly into white quartz countertops. I am so excited, all this in a 2.6m x 2.8m kitchen. I have also asked the countertop peeps to smooth off an additional piece of quartz to fit the sink aperture so I can use that as additional work space. I am boring my boyfriend with endlessly searching for the best deals on things and trying my luck haggling which is not usually like me but lots of fun! I would lose the middle cupboard on the left to give maximum hanging rail. You also need to make sure that the hanging rail is of a usable height so that clothes don't hang on the worktop. The picture below is of mostly men's shirts hanging in my laundry room. That's a standard height larder cabinet for reference. I'm not as tall as you so you could easily go a bit higher. I'm not sure that you really need to close off the rail when entertaining, just shut the door to the whole room. I think doors will add an extra expense and get in the way. Ultimately, the room is what it is, and if there are clothes hanging in there, then that is what the laundry is there for. Also, I would consider the point about having 1 washing machine. Modern washing machines can do a load in about an hour, so maybe a cupboard would be more useful to you. Also the noise might be a bit too much. I think you're getting there, though.

In our previous house we had Ikea in cupboard bins. They are covered when closed and were brilliant. We collected all vegetable waste for the compost heap and had no issues with smells. The bins are not too big so regular emptying also helps keep smells at bay. We don't have fitted bins in this house but have a good looking bin ftom Dumo (I think) which has two compartments, 2/3 recycling (We can recycle everything together here) 1/3 landfill. We have a separate food waste bin and have no smells. Anyway, if I had cupboard space I'd probably go back to an Ikea bin but that'll have to wait until kitchen gets redone one day!

From what I can see on the web site, the suspension rail is not a supporting rail--it is optional and can be used to help you mount the load-bearing vertical support rails evenly.

You can call Ikea and ask them. Someone in the company should be able to answer your question.

Did you see the suspension rail? What is the spacing between the mounting holes? If the spacing matches up to the stud spacing in your house it can be helpful because then you can support everything by screwing it into the studs. (At least that is the way it works with the ClosetMaid system we have.) Otherwise I can't see that it would add any support to the unit.

Did anyone ever get an answer here? Do the uprights need to be attached to the studs? If so, is the required spacing 24"? And what happens if the studs in your house aren't 24"?

I need same answer asap. Yes I have the directions but measurements are not included , I only have single unit & thetes not room for suspension rail. Thought I had it but baskets don't slide right so need measurements for the 2 main rails

I have also installed the Algot system. The suspension rail is only to support the uprights and to keep them even. However, they should all be either attached to studs or with heavy duty toggle bolts such as the Toggler brand drywall anchors (they will hold hundreds of pounds). Before fastening the wall uprights, attach them to the suspension rail and then attach a pair of brackets with a shelf (or basket) halfway down your wall. With the shelf in place, mark the holes to attach the wall uprights. This is the method the directions give for attaching the uprights to get the appropriate spacing for the shelves, etc. I am very pleased with the system and have had it installed for about 3 years.
