Comments (6)forzaitalia is right , you need a specialist or two to answer your questions. Something to think about though, if you have a clear 20metre run by what will probably need to be 7metres wide, that is a huge space, if not and walls need to come out, then there will be some serious structural work to be done. The size you are considering will hold about 120 - 150 tons of water so the foundation and construction of the pool will need to be enough to support that, also depending on the area in which you live you may need a ground survey for any services that may be impacted by the work, you will need a survey of the property and foundation anyway to assess any impact such a construction may have on the property. A professional pool constructor should be able to answer all of those questions and probably some I haven't thought of....See Morestoring logs in plastered alcove - how not to damage the walls?
Comments (30)Beano, all my tech is stuff I get from family/freecycle so nothing is permanently installed. A Google thingy in the back combined with an old BT box makes this old telly 'smart', but when it dies there'll inevitably be another generation of obsolete tech being thrown out which I'll gratefully take off people's hands. I'm just as reliant as consumer capitalism as everyone else, just more of a bottom feeder. The remote control for the Google hub works through the logs BTW ;-)...See MoreDo I take down the plaster and the ceilings as well? Bricks look faded
Comments (19)When you talk of removing plaster, do you realise that in a modern house like yours the plaster is likely to be a skimming of plaster over plaster board so basically its impossible to just remove the plaster. To take this all back to basics, you need to understand what your house is constructed of - what makes up it’s layers, so to speak - and how its constructed. When you start to get quotes from trades, say an electrician, they will tell you what they want, such as cutting out channels for the trunking, wiring etc. Don’t start taking out everything in your house without taking some advice from a builder. Also remember any builder worth their salt will be busy and don’t pay anyone ANY money up front. they will invoice you for work they have completed. Don’t take the ceilings down or try to get the plaster off until you’ve spoken to a plasterer. Again, plasterers are hard to get hold of as there is so much housebuilding going on and belive me its not a job you can do yourself. (Unless you are a plasterer). Also, as you are a beginnner, you will have plenty to worry about other than the colour of the bricks! If the bricks of neighbouring houses look similar then possibly it’s weathering. As long as the pointing is good, don’t worry. Also bear in mind the shortage of materials and increasing costs when you are planning work. having said all that it is exciting and rewarding to do up one’s home. Good luck and enjoy!!...See MoreOngoing issues with roofer and I don't know what to do
Comments (13)What an awful thing to happen. You must have been left traumatised. The job was a relatively simple job, well replacing the tiles was, and yet they’ve left the place worse than it was before. He sounds like a complete rip off merchant, and his “roofers” sound like they were just labourers, and not very good ones! Unfortunately fancy websites mean nothing, and in fact most tradesmen I know don’t have websites if they are sole traders. I would report them to Trading Standards, you can do this via Citizens Advice Bureau, and leave reviews everywhere - on Google Reviews, Trustpilot and their Facebook page if they have one. You may well find other disgruntled customers on there, you won’t be the first. You can sue them through the Small Claims Court, so worth looking into. To find a decent roofer to put things right, I would go by recommendation. I realise this can be difficult if its an area where you don’t know anyone yet. Ask on Facebook for recommendations or if roofers are working in your town, knock on the door in the evening and ask if the customer would recommend them. Checkatrader and the like are breeding grounds for con merchants. Hope it is all resolved for you soon. 🙏...See More- 4 years ago
