I think I might have made a grander entrance hall with storage for coats and a guest cloakroom. I might have put the kids rooms on the right side and put the master suite on the same side as the living room in order to enjoy the view. It would mean you would have more corridor but would likely be more impressive

A word to the wiser regarding sofas.....think about it. How often do you actually see a sofa completely filled with people? You don't. People want more personal space. You may get one or two people to sit together on the sofa comfortably. Better to have a love seat and a couple of chairs. The love seat will appear large in a room this size. I believe the article you read may be referring to large pieces of storage furniture. Like using a single armoire instead of a few smaller pieces to allow for more space to walk yet retain maximum storage. The extra walking space is the part that makes the room feel larger. You should also look at some space saving furniture, There are so many brilliant ideas out there - ottomans that contain extra seating, wall mounted stools which would work with the drop leaf table idea previously mentioned (otherwise you have to find space for them when the table is not there). Also coffee tables that transform (lift up) into dining tables so you could actually do away with the one in the kitchen and perhaps have a slimline coffee bar there instead. I guess it depends again on how often you will use the formal dining table
