New Miele Induction Range

As I'm still planning my kitchen and hoping to get an induction range, I came across a new Miele induction range on the AJ Madison web site! It's a mere $6,999 and it says it's coming soon. http://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/HR1622I.html

Has anyone seen it in person? Looks a little...bulky and unattractive. Thoughts? I was thinking about getting the (bargain-priced) Samsung induction range but the "flame technology" is very unappealing.

Yikes! That exceeds my powers of self delusion.

Nice one, jw, and close to home for me.

I think whether one sees pulses of boiling or not will depend on whether the thermal mass of the pan base is high enough for its thermal time constant to be much longer than the time between induction bursts. Cast iron could be in this category, but if most pans and pots were, one would loose the rapid response that is expected from using induction.

Certainly in lower priced induction units, such as my Frigidaire, the lower power settings operate using control of low frequency sets of high frequency induction power bursts. Other options could be selected by the circuit designer at greater cost of electronics parts, such as coil current control, or using a much higher frequency of turning on and off the bursts to achieve the same duty cycle as the lower frequency control does.

sherri1058: I found this youtube video, and it is hard to know for sure, but it does not look like the numbers are shown 2 at a time, as the knob is turned. This video is making me think that at least in the demoed unit, there are no intermediate levels (even though the knob is smoothly moving between numbers).

It would be interesting to see a video where the boiling water knob is moved half or less and see if the boiling pattern slows down.

I was also intrigued by the starting of the boiling pattern at the bottom of the pan. It looks like a perfect (but smallish) rectangle. I wonder if it is due to the pan or it is the shape of the induction element below the ceramic glass.

    POLL: Gas or induction hob?

    Q

    Comments (52)
I love gas, it gives you great control, my food is so much better, less burning, better crusts on steaks... and gas and copper are increadibly fast to repond for delicate sauces - something the induction pots and pans I have used so far just can't match. Add to that, gas works when there is no electricity - a problem where I live - and is incredibly inexpensive compared to electricity. I grew up using gas, and I was soooo jealous of all my friends who had electric, until I finally got electric in my first home. it was TERRIBLE! Jealousy gone, I spent 15 years in agony in the kitchen until I could aford to go back to gas. Now, with induction, it is faster to respond than electricity, but it still requires electricity, and I'm still dealing with the learning curve. It is easier to do a wipedown from simple, non-technical cooking, but you have to be very careful, as the glass tops scratch, and are fragile and much of my beautiful cookware is useless - my heavy cast iron scratches, and can easily shatter an induction top and my lovely copper cookware doesn't work on induction. So, I vote for both. A couple of induction burners for what it does best, and using my multiply stainless steel, and for quick cleanup and gas where it excels.

Latest advice appreciated on the best big induction downdraught hobs please (Berbel, Bora, Gaggenau, Siemens, Bosch or others). We want best steam and fat clearance rates, quietest motors, easy-clean (unsure re self-clean, ducted or recirulated air). Berbel's FaceBook page features lots of customer complaints regarding after-sales service and spare parts, but some seem due to Covid delays which we think is unavoidable; another mentions guests sitting "in a haze" from the recirculated air and obviously nobody wants that! We need to order very soon but definitely don't want ceiling extraction. Many thanks for prompt replies!

New extension, new kitchen - range or hob / oven combo?

    Q

    Comments (2)
I prefer the flexibility of a hob and side by side ovens if you have the space. I have never used an induction range but am not attracted to them as the ovens are very low, the configuration is restrictive and they appear to be awkward to clean underneath. Separate induction hobs also have snazzy extraction options that actually work! I like having the pot drawer under my hob and like being able to see how the oven is progressing without having to bend down. I could not fit 2 side by side ovens in my kitchen so opted for 1.5 and this works for us. Cost is another factor. Ranges with all the bells and whistles are pricier than their separate equivalents.

I have had 2 Smeg range cookers. As stated above by Jonathan put a pan on it with water or butter or something in it, not empty. Have you looked up the error code online? I would call them, it's brand new. If you cannot shift it from that state then it's faulty and should be replaced.

After swallowing very hard, I ordered a Miele Induction Range last week. It will be the most expensive item in our house. I spoke with Customer Service, who put me on hold for 10 minutes to research, and was told that each burner has 9 discrete levels, plus "keep warm", plus two boost levels, for a total of 12 discrete levels. I believe she understood the nature of my question, and hopefully I'll be able to do some testing when I have the range in my hot little hands.

My Miele cooktop only cycles on the warm to level 3 settings. I don't know about the range. I put
some water in a one of my "thin" pans on level 3. I could hear cooktop
cycling on and off (about 2.5 seconds on, 1.5 seconds off??) but it is
not a high enough setting for bubbles to form unless the lid is on.
Without a lid, the temperature of the water was holding around 163
degrees, when the lid was on the bubbles did pulse, but since the off
cycle is so short the bubbles would not quite disappear before they
    resumed. When I moved my
cast iron pan onto the hob the cycling noise all but disappeared. This
says to me the noise is definitely pan related. I was
surprised at how low the lowest settings were when compared to my
portable, but I do really like the control at those lower levels. Do the half steps make a difference? I think it depends on you. I like them, but I also know a professional chef that tells me she doesn't use them.

i have had the range for a while and it is excellent. I did have a Miele induction cooktop in a prior house. The cooktop had more functionality than the range "top". No timers or half steps on the range - I can live with that

The oven is superb and is a joy to cook with. Great breads with the steam function. "Gentle bake" on baked pasta dishes cooks them perfectly.

I am using the slow roasting function with the wireless probe more. It works like a charm - this is the tenderest meat I ever made. It roasts at 225 for about double the normal time at 350 or so. Pork tenderloin that is super tender when it is usually difficult due to pork being bred lean these days

haven't noticed any noise. cookware is a odd combination of all clad, staub, mario battali thin cast iron

the only way to scratch the top is by throwing salt around and getting it under the pan. have to be a little careful, but the ease of cleaning outweighs that

worth it? Yes - got $7k and love to bake/cook and you will enjoy it

We have had the Miele induction range since Nov 2016 and it's been wonderful as far as control goes. Like many people had mentioned, the ceran top does scratch. Even though I clean up immediately, it's impossible to maintain the glossy, shiny, black, mirror-like surface as scratch-free. That's just something you have to live with, as I was told when I went back to the store and asked if there's any remedy. Unit never had issues until two days ago we got this error: F, E, 1, 5. I turned off all burners and it started again (was using the 2 right side burners when this happened). Has anyone seen this on theirs? I took a photo and plan on calling Miele support next.

i usually find the top to be dirty with water or just a film that was half wiped away. try cleaning with some degreaser

ziyouzizai - how was your experience with support for your range error?

Miele sent 3 people to my house and they replaced a major component and stove has been performing flawlessly since. Since that F-E-5-1 code showed up, all 4 burners eventually stopped working within 2 days. That said, those Miele gentlemen were courteous, capable, super clean, and extremely professional. A word of caution: get the extended warranty for your peace of mind if you are considering a Miele. We live in the Chicago suburbs and the service appointment did take one week to materialise.

I tried to turn on my brand new HR1622i for the first time tonight, the 2 front burners and right rear burner would not stay on 1-9, they would display 0 after a second or so. The rear left burner instead of showing 0, it would flash FE 54 and FE 51 error codes alternatively. I guess I will have to call my dealer or Miele service tomorrow. I am totally disappointed.

Miele replaced my DOA induction range, last month and the new one has been working flawlessly until few days ago. I'd turn on the right front burner to say 9, and it would immediately go back to 0 like it did not detect any induction ready cookware, even though my induction ready cookware is on the burner. I had to turn off the breaker, waited a minute or so and then turn the breaker back on. This fixed the issue, but it just did it again tonight. I was able to get it working again by turning the right front burner on and off, then the left burner was working again without using the breaker trick. Anyone else had or heard of this issue? I will take a video next time it does it again, since it is doing this sporadically, and will contact my dealer soon. My Miele Combi-steam oven was acting funny after I used the meat probe. I googled the issue, looks like someone else had that same issue in the combi-steam thread. So far I am not too thrilled with Miele.

for those that own this range, do all your burners turn on and heat up the cookware the first turn every time? I wonder what I mentioned above is 'normal', basically after I turn on the burner, within a second the number would go back to 0 like it didn't detect an induction ready cookware, so I have to turn it off and on again. it'd usually work the 2nd try. I have not contacted my dealer, or remember to take a video yet.

I have never had that problem. It sounds to be that their may be a short or something. I would contact the dealer, it should not work that way.

rych, I haven't had that issue either. The burner always starts heating as soon as I turn the burner on.

I have the Miele induction range, and it’s the bomb! Not bulky, not even close to ugly, and works like a dream. I researched induction ranges, and the different manufacturers for over a year before deciding on the Miele. I recommend you visit a Miele showroom and look at the range, and ask for a demonstration. You won’t be sorry!!!

@Rych What type of pan are you using? Is it the same pan that's giving you the issue or multiple types? I've had this issue on my induction [non Miele] Range at home. I have a lot of different induction cookware but two pans in particular give me the same issue.

I think it is the pan, it is actually a wok, a Circulon Symmetry 14" Stir Fry Wok from Macy's that one can usually get on sale for under $30. I actually have 2 of these, because they were so cheap and these are the only 2 cookware that I have this issue with. I will eventually replace them. Can anyone recommend a good non-stick 14" or so wok to use with this induction range?

I have the Miele induction range and like it a lot. I would like to use the self-clean but am concerned about ruining the electronics. Should I be concerned? An appliance salesman said he doesn't use the self-clean due to the potential electronics issue. Met a Miele rep in the appliance store and he said to use the self-clean, which is what I would expect him to say. He did not admit to any issues. What are you experiences?

I use the self clean all the time. It works wonderfully on this Miele. Remember to take the racks out. I have used it on all ranges and ovens I have had in the past. Gaggeneau, Jenn-Aire, and G.E. I have never had a problem I have also never heard of anyone saying not to use the self cleaning.

Thank you vickinbobyo, I'm glad to hear it works well for you, I will try it! re: the racks, Miele says:

    "Automatic cleaning, including accessories!"

Thanks to the PyroFit finish, side runners, baking and roasting racks as well as FlexiClip regain their sparkle after every Self Clean program. This is because accessories with this finish can be left inside the oven during Self Clean to be cleaned automatically at the same time as the oven. Did you have a problem with the racks? I certainly don't want to ruin them. Can you share how you clean the glass door on the inside? Thanks for your help!

i leave the racks in - they dont discolor or bind

I have always taken them out in other ovens, so I didn't even look about this oven. I will check it out. Much easier if I can leave them in. Thanks

wireless probe for my Miele HR1622i oven went to intermittently connecting when cooking with it. It has a non changeable battery and I presume just needed a replacement. I called Miele today and the replacement probe costs $576.81 - seems excessively expensive, hard to image the manufacturing cost is more than double digits.

Wow that is expensive! I used the probe for the first time on turkey and it wasn't accurate. Overcooked it. And it had a different reading than our Thermapen therm. I should give it another try on something else, I guess.

So I thought I would check in how are people with this Range still loving it? I'm about to pull the trigger and was curious the current pulse on the item :)

I'm loving it! But I haven't tried the probe again, yet.

i assume they took out the port for the manual probe to be used? do you ever find the only 9-12 settings on the induction to be problonati?

is it 'normal' that one can't set both 2 front burners to 9? mine would automatically turn the left burner down to 8, maybe it is drawing too much current/amp so it does that to protect itself from overloading?

Still love my range, would never buy any other. But I also have not used the probe and do not use all the whistle and bells. Had one little problem when I first got the range but Miele had someone come out immediately and I live out in the middle of nowhere. I have had this range over two years now.

I use the probe all the time and it is accurate. It is easy to place with roasts. More difficult to place accurately with chicken and turkey to get an accurate reading. You first have to make a good estimate of how much of the probe should be exposed after inserting it

i wish the induction top had half steps sometimes, but it isnt a deal breaker. The top will reduce the other burner if it is put on a high setting - it shares power. Saute is #6 or 7. Boiling is #8 and above, and i dont have many pots boiling at once since the heat time is so fast

the oven is a dream. My two favorites are slow roasting and Gentle bake. Slow roasting is 225f with the probe inserted into the meat. It generally takes twice as long as "standard" roasting but the meat is very tender - even the pork loin that you buy in the supermarket.

Gentle bake is what i use for lasagna and the like. I dont use a aluminum foil cover with it and the results are perfect

26 months later and still love it / use it every single day. I would not have any other brand. Buy the extended warranty if you are really considering the purchase. We have not had another F-E-1-5 incident since January 2017 after the Miele service crew appointment.

Preserving a scratch free induction cooktop. I always use a paper towel between the pan and cooktop for the highest heat settings. For settings 7 or less I use a small Silpat. Four years and no scratches. Worth the additional care.

We found a demo unit on sale and decided to take the plunge. So far we are very happy with it. The fans in the oven are much, much quieter than in the Viking, and we are not having any problems with noise from the induction cooktop. We have also been talking to the very helpful lady in our local Miele Showroom and she told us that Miele is discontinuing the rotisserie accessory, so we bought the last one she had while we had the chance.

Discontinuing the rotisserie feature is something I had not heard. Any further information on this?

She had other people in the showroom she was also helping, so we couldn’t talk as much as I would have liked. We have to pick up another item soon so I will try to get some more info then. Meanwhile, we plan on trying out the one we got sometime this week.

Hello. Just wanted to share that I recently purchased the Miele HR1622-2 induction range (it was installed this week).

Unfortunately, the electrician did not orient the outlet correctly (it was installed per the specs provided but the specs don't show the orientation of the plug) so the installers could not plug in the range and turn it on. The installers connected the water line, installed the anti-tip mechanism and moved the range in place.

The next day the electrician came back, rotated the outlet and we plugged in the range.

Following the "before first use" directions, I wiped down the interior of the oven and then ran the oven for an hour. No problems.

After wrapping up the oven startup process, I placed an induction compatible pan on the stovetop and turned on a burner. The unit almost immediately read FE and flashed 51, 52, 53. The troubleshooting guide indicates, for an error code FE, to unplug the unit for 1 minute and replug - try again. I did that and same result.

So, now Miele will be sending out a technician in a few days to diagnose the problem (from what I can glean on the internet, FE 51, 52, 53 likely means 3 of the 4 burners are defective).

Didn't even get to use the range 1 time - it was defective upon delivery.

Wish me luck in getting this resolved quickly (fortunately, the dealer I ordered it from has been engaged from the beginning and is interfacing with Miele).

    Scott,

My wife and I had the exact same issue 11 months ago and unfortunately, our local dealer was little help in resolving the issue as they said Miele does not listen to the dealers. Miele insisted on sending out a technician who determined all 4 burners needed to be replaced as well as the main computer board which is crazy as it was brand new. We told our dealer that was unacceptable as it was DOA and we wanted a new one shipped to us. Our dealer told us Miele would not do it but would give us an additional year on our 5 yr warranty and we said no, we want the DOA unit replaced with a new one. We went back and forth with Miele not doing what they should do which was to send a brand new replacement. I finally posted a lengthy note on Miele's Facebook page and the next day we received a phone call from Miele who then shipped a brand new, most recent, model to us. We were sent the HR1662-1 originally and they sent the HR622-2 which we should have received the 1st time anyway. During this time, we were w/o a working range to cook on for 6 weeks. We had told the Miele rep Miele should do something for us for having to eat out much of that time. I suggested they send the pizza stone :-) but they sent a tray HUBB 4 months later which we already had because one came with the unit so now we have two which we never use. The replacement unit has been working great since and we absolutely love it as they product is the best when it works but Miele is not a customer centric company and it seems that if you need action you may have to start posting online. We wish you the best of luck and hope you have a better experience than we did.

    Hi Tom & Julie,

I was able to finally get a replacement range - my builder stepped in and (I assume) made a fuss with the distributor. It took multiple attempts to get a working unit. I believe the reason the others were failed upon delivery had to do with the delivery process - the range has to be treated very delicately (no bouncing or shaking the unit when it is on a two wheel cart from the truck to your home) - if your home has steps or uneven walkway, make sure the delivery team puts some plywood down. My builder helped to ensure a good delivery by putting a 2x4 trackway all the way from the street to my home and a ramp up to my home entryway (about 2 steps up) - which the delivery team used.

My recommendation to anyone purchasing the HR1622 range.

    1) Get an agreement from the "seller", if the unit is DOA, they will take it back/credit you immediately (no having to wait for Miele to come and look at the unit and provide them with an RMA).

    2) have a clean, clear and smooth path to the place of installation from the street/truck -- no bouncing, jarring or shaking the unit while it is being moved.

    3) before the unit gets put into place, plug it in (the cord is long enough to plug it in before sliding into place) and put an induction pan/pot on the top and turn it on, test all 4 of the burners - if it is DOA, it will error out after about 5 seconds (FE error on the display). If you get an FE error, refuse the unit and make them take it back.

I could be wrong about my assumption on delivery handling - but after the builder took the extra steps to help the delivery team with the 2x4s and ramp, the final range worked just fine. The others had FE codes and had to be returned.

I do like the range - now that I have a working one.

one more add: for the first unit that coded out (FE error), the parts had to come from Germany. Miele called me with a current estimated turnaround to repair of 7 weeks. Just a heads up if you do get a DOA unit and the top has to be repaired.

I finally received a working HR1622-2 (see my previous posts in this thread). I don't believe the previous units were defective, but were damaged in delivery (I don't have proof of that, just what I think based upon 2 units having the same problem - non working cook tops).

After my builder stepped in an assisted the delivery crew, they were able to bring the range in "gently" and we got everything connected.

It is a very, very nice range. The oven cooks well and the induction top is nice. The cook top does require some more care and cleaning than a gas cooktop - If you've ever had a glass top electric range, you know what I mean (watch out for scratching the top, it's hardened glass - not a metal grate top). I've developed my own cleanup procedure and I use the Miele ceramic top cleaner - it's simple and I don't mind having to clean it up after almost every use.

I baked a whole chicken in the oven, using the included wireless probe. Turned out perfect. There was a greasy mess in the oven afterwards, which I cleaned out following the included manual - then ran a level 1 self clean which got rid of all the burnt on residue in the oven cavity (it did deposit on the glass door, which the Miele ceramic clean helped to clean off (very small amounts used).

I also had the Miele 24" speed oven installed - and it is really great. I use it quite a lot. I'm not too much into microwaves but it is nice to have for occasional use. I reheated leftover pasta using the special mode reheat for casseroles and the outcome was very good - nice hot food temp and not dried out at all.

Between the two units (range and 24" speed oven), I'm very pleased.

Earlier this year I was thinking the output on the two front burners was low. Then I noticed that that there was a vibration when I was using the cooktop. So around June 1 I asked Miele to come take a look at it. They called back a day later and said they would send a third party to come look at it. I declined, stating one of the reasons I purchased the HR1622 was because Miele has their own in house technicians. So Miele sends their own technician out two weeks later.

The technician says you need a fan and the two front burners. I’ll order parts and come back. Three weeks later Miele calls, says the parts are in, need to schedule the install. Earliest we can be there two weeks away. The night before the appointment Miele calls and says we will not be there tomorrow, as we do not have your parts yet. What the heck?

Another two weeks pass, and Miele calls to schedule the install. We can be there August 14th. 2 techs came and installed the new parts on the 14th.

10 weeks to fix my range. Seems a bit long to me. As much as I love my Hr1622, I’ll need to rethink buying a Miele product in the future.

On the bright side, my front burners work as well as new, and no more vibrations.

Here is a pic of the old 11” burner:

Also, I am wondering what the differences are between the HR1622I and the HR1622-2. Anybody know?

Scott E, or anybody else: have you discovered a good cleaning method for the Miele speed oven? We use that oven a lot and there are burnt on splatter marks on the back wall from roasting meat. Scrubbing with a baking soda paste will not remove the marks. We love this speed oven except for cleaning that interior oven surface.

I used an everyday spray degreaser and a stainless steel, reusable scrubber. They are about the size of your fist with coarse threads

ms_boof, the interior can be a pain to clean and keep clean. I've used the Miele Ceramic and Stainless Steel Hob Cleaner with some success (it cleans the glass really well). It does take time and effort to get the interior clean. I now keep the all glass tray under the metal rack when I cook / the glass can capture spills and splashes. I do have to take the glass tray out sometimes, for clearance of taller cookware. I use the speed oven waaaay more than the range and also love the speed oven.

Hello. Just wanted to share that we encountered another error code today, four years after the first incident (error code FE51). This time, the error code is FE13. None of the burners would turn on and the support person on the phone created a ticket for a third party technician to come take a look. Given we need a working range ASAP, I accepted the arrangement. Apparently her manual of codes and fixes does bot contain FE13. I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced said problem? Given there are only 2 months left to our 5 year warranty, I wonder if anyone else might have explored purchasing an extension to their warranty, or if that was even an option. Or should we be looking at anither brand? The range is wonderful when it is working. However, it is beyond frustrating when it fails completely.

I think that's code FE31, not FE13, anyway, my range is touchy too, I usually get that error code if after I cooked something and the glass top is still very hot with the 3 or 2 bars showing. if I try to cook again while the bars are still showing, I will get the FE31 code. I just wait for the range to cool down and all the 'hot bars' disappear before using it again. Give that a try. Do we normally get 5 yr warranty? I thought the warranty is only 1-2 yrs without the extended warranty.

Right. code 31, just like the photo shows. sorry about that. The stove was definitely cold when I tuned it on in the morning. I made dinner the night before and that was 14 hours prior to this error code showing up. The range worked last night but not this morning :(

then the next thing to try is to do a 'hard reset' by turn off the breaker to cut the power supply to the unit for about 3-5 minutes then turn it back on.
