Yes that's the problem, there isn't really a scheme! I want to add a colour that will go with the sofas, and being them into the rest of the room. The curtains are grey/beige with charcoal print and the walls beige and cream carpet. A rug is a great idea and I think I need to get the gold out and replace with silver. I've already got rid of the mirror and replaced with a silver clock.

I'd change the cushions and match to a rug if I had an idea of what colour would go. I'm stuck with the carpet and sofas. It just feels like it needs something else but I'm not sure which colour to go for!

It's a nice room it just needs a little tweaking.Have you considered changing the coffee table? I think something lighter would lift the room. Some new cushions would really help also.heres some pics hope they are of help.

I have a light purple rug actually and a small coffee table. I'll have a move around and see how that looks today.

Remove the plants from the window ,change the coffee table for a rectangular one,and the picture above the sofa is wrong size

I'm pretty attached to those plants so I'm sticking with them. Although I may move the biggest one. What is it about them that's off?

I've got another painting I'm going to swap out for that one, smaller but still the same shape. I'll post some pictures later.

I would move the plants from the window to the table by the lamp... They seem to be blocking a lot of lovely natural light from your room. Good luck with it

I agree the plants are blocking out the natural light, rearranging or moving the larger ones is a good idea. I would also do something with the chimney breast, if you are unable to have or don't like fireplaces....perhaps a large mirror or feature of small mirrors to reflect the light and open the room up? Some sort of focal point on that wall would bring it together I think.

1. I would add a rug, one that sofa can sit half on and half off.
2. On the wall where the floor lamp is shining light onto, I would cluster 3 pictures and the small gold framed mirror you have. The proportions will work better if they have clustered.
3. Paint coffee table in an off white or the light colour in your curtains (can't see what colour it is very well.) for this you could use Annie Sloan chalk paint, as you don't need to sand down or prepare wood first, simply slap it on!

Couple more things!

Get rid of red cushion.
Add decorative radiator cover, a nice white wooden one.
You could line the back wall of your wooden glass window cabinet with a nice print wall paper.

I think you're in danger of mixing warm colours (wooden tones of a table, brown leather and beige walls) with cool colours (curtains with grey in them, purple rug). Those cushions in the photo above are gorgeous - but they are all blue-undertones (therefore cool) colours so I think they'd be compounding the problem. Room needs a lift so I'd go with a cream rug, with a pattern on it. Rich texture on it (no shoes in your sitting room from now on!) and big enough for the chair and the sofa to sit on it (ideally, all on it - yep, that big) completely. At the very least - to have the front legs of sofa and chair on it. Size adds richness and cohesion - I thought of this "Diamond Shaggy Rug" from M&S - http://www.marksandspencer.com/diamond-shaggy-rug/p/p22329608

Also - that blank wall where a fireplace used to be. the room has no welcoming focal point - could you at least fit a fire surround and knock into the chimney to create a hole for flowers, stacked logs or the like? Alternatively - put a small console table there with some slim lights on it and some decorative items - not too many. Plus a great picture or photo above it.

Lighting looks sparse (i.e. non overhead lights). Can you manage a slim side table next to the left (as you look at it) side of the chair?

Agree about smaller coffee table.

Hope that sparks some ideas but I think you're biggest wins would be a large, large textured cream rug and some kind of focal point on chimney breast.

Oops one final point which you MUST do: the chimney breast has no air vent in it - this is against Building Regs and must be inserted as a safety measure and to ensure you don't get damp. If you do nothing else, get that done ASAP.

Sorry - just seen the original post re: aubergine leather. Doh! Purple rug may be too much, so I'll stick with my cream rug though!! Textured (cable knit or velvet) cushions - large ones and several of them - odd numbers 3 or 5. Forgot to add that.

Smaller table, rug which I know is too small but I don't have a budget for a big rug yet. I will get one though!

Now I've moved that bigger plant I see it's better.

I have some farrow and ball paint in calluna, a very light heather colour and I may paint the coffee table base. I'm not sure on that yet. I'd hate to ruin it...

I will do the round lamp table top in calluna though. I've painted that table several times!
