Bedroom makeover help required!!

Bedroom in desperate need of a makeover but need some advice on a few things!

we are keeping the duvet covers and bed but looking to replace everything else including carpet, furniture, paint the walls etc.

Any thoughts on making this room turn in to a homely and more contemporary space?

We are hoping to have a feature wall either paint or wallpaper but unsure of colours etc.

Any advice/thoughts would be very much appreciated

Not sure what colour the duvet is - pink? Red? You could paint the wall behind a raspberry colour as a feature wall with similar accent curtains. (And lose the art)

Maybe try match the furniture so it's all dark as you have black bed, and pine or other wood units. This will make it darker but more of a boudoir feel.

A matching rug at the bottom if the bed could work too.

Hi Diane, I've seen a lot of bedrooms being designed as boudoirs which often leaves the room dark and dingy. Looking at your room, I would use your bed as the focus, and bring in some light stone type colours, maybe with a very small hint of purple on a feature wall - look for 'Pebble' colour. Then I would bring in richer accessories, so darker curtains and really nice lighting with brown shades. Also I would utilise thick woollen throws, and faux sheep skin for the floor to give the room a rich, luxurious feel but still remaining personal to you.

I love little nooks like this! Why not get in touch with your local timber merchant and source some reclaimed wood to hang as shelves, one above the other. Find some eclectic accessories to dress the shelves and add character to your room. To fill the floor space why not put a dresser for your bits and bobs, socks, ties, jumpers, etc. That might help to free up storage space in the rest of your room. Some gunmetal coloured pendant lighting dropped from the ceiling will look really stylish if possible, otherwise your current spotlight will work just as well. You can then transfer the style to the rest of your room, I think it will suit your bedding and light wood floor really nicely. http://houzz.com/photos/192218 Good luck!

Hi. I would probably declutter first. There is an awful lot of furniture in the room. I would get rid of the cabinet on the fireplace wall and move the tv on top of the chest of drawers. Remove the coffee tables and the pine chair and the items on top of the wardrobe. I'd remove the 3 pictures and replace with a very large piece of art, I don't know what you like but something vintage or contemporary ie travel, cinema, typography, street signs etc. Walls could look good in grey but choose a warmer grey, a cold grey doesn't look as it if would work. Or you could go for a rich, deep colour on a feature wall. What colours, style do you like? New bedding to coordinate and I'd add just one large statement cushion. I'd also add a bigger mirror in the room. Do you have pictures of the other side of the room? Buy a nice bin, some of the wire industriał style ones look good.

I would recommend white painted walls. Add accessories that are colorful if you wish. You can change it anytime you want. Depending on the space, I would definitely add something like raw thick tree branch. You can then make some fairy doors on it in color. Interaction with a child making these doors :) I would also choose funky prints of animals over the decals. Or have some animal heads hung on the walls. Children loves cozy spaces canopy is the thin. I would recommend Numero 74. I love their range of colors and quality. Add some cool pillows. If you are into diy, make some. Paint on it, embroider, use different techniques to apply color and texture to the room. Have more than one lighting source: fairylights, floor lamp, etc. If you want something really cool: cover ceiling in polka dots. Don't paint it. You can cut out some cardpaper circles and stick it with blutack. Use different sizes one color rather than having different colors. Take it off when tired of it easily. Thank you for the very helpful comments.. I'll definitely take your suggestions on board.

The duvet cover is apparently red although I think it's more of a pink/purple..

I am definitely getting rid of the 'art'..!

I like idea of the pebble colour for the feature wall and adding accessories as you both suggested. What about the carpet... a light sand colour I'd probably go for? And any particular colour for the "darker" curtains?

Hi Diane, The duvet cover is quite a strong colour so I agree on softer wall colour, you could also have a lovely runner in a neutral colour over the duvet cover to break up the stripes. Your headboard is dark and a bit of a statement so you could use that colour as accents in the room.

Regarding the furniture, it is nice to have some symmetry with bedside tables on either side of the bed (if you have space) . If you want a luxury feel then would stay away from wood effect furniture and either go with something made or wood or painted/ washed wood.

The curtains, if they are pushed out to the side more means that they will bring in more light as they won't be covering the window so much. Another tip is to have a larger curtain rail, higher and wider than the window and that will make the window seem much bigger.

You can get away with bigger cushions on the bed, as that will also make it feel more indulgent.
