Hi. I think you have to arrange it so there are two separately zoned areas - but it can look cohesive. You need flexibility and ample room to be able to walk around the furniture for access to the doors. Do you use the fireplace? Assuming you do, I would suggest an L-shaped couch with the L under the window to the left of the fireplace and the back of the couch in front of the french doors to the outside, built-in bookshelves/TV on the long wall to the right of the french doors, a large rug in front of the couch with coffee table, an armchair facing the couch on the other side of the fireplace and then a separate sitting area - two chairs and a little table - in front of the large window. If you have something to look at out there, have the chairs face out, if not, have them face in. If you keep all the furniture with a low profile and similar colour scheme and have the chairs and armchair easily moveable/slidable then you can pull all the furniture up together when you have large numbers of people sitting around the fireplace or watching the TV. Lamps can be added at the end, but probably one in the corner next to the smaller window and then one or two down the other end near the large window. What is the length of the right hand wall? Provisionally though, I think the shape of the room and the location of the patio doors massively limits your options and I don't see how you'll have enough space for a decent sized kitchen and separate eating area...

Jonathan - I see that I should have given the measurement for the short wall in the corner, which is 900mm. Even though I cannot get to 1000mm x 1200mm,I think a 900mm x 1200mm shower would be a major improvement. Yes, I'd normally want to avoid opening a door straight onto a view of the loo, but I'd not rule it out to make the room better. Rinq - I've attached a plan to show the shower in more context. It really is the ultimate "add-on"! Sadly, there is no space for anything in the corridor but we do have an airing cupboard elsewhere. The shower room extension is partly below ground (with a French drain) so all the green areas below are banks sloping up from the house. This, and moving the drain outside the bedroom door, is probably why extending would cost so much. You've given me some more great ideas so I will start checking out the cost of moving the soil stack versus relocating the basin.

Hi, assuming the window wall is 3.40 and the fireplace wall is 3.94? Would something like this work? You could 'incorporate the desk in the bookcase(s). I'd move the radiator to under the window. Leave some space between desk and wall for air flow. Or make slats or something above the radiator to let air through.
