Quartz vs Solid Surface

Can anyone explain the usability difference between quartz and solid surface. I know the difference around composition and fitting, I'm more interested in everyday use.

Which scratches easily, what marks easily, which can burn from hot pans, can either chip or stain.

Following on from that, are there any brands you would recommend over another and why

My mum has a galaxy quartz worktop. It looks amazing. It needs polishing once in a blue moon to keep it super shiny (use a special product) and is generally tough wearing. She does though use heat protectors more to keep it looking new and it did acquire a chip by a careless fitter but it was underneath. If anything is worth noting is that like marble if you serve food into a plate or serving vessel which is standing on it the food (or even a cup of tea) will turn ice cold in no time. I found it very handy to cool baby milk formula and food which could be too hot as the cooling down time was very short! I have heard that corian is useless - stains, scratches and even cracks under too much heat, all very easily.

I have Compac white mirror Quartz which comes with a lifetime guarantee and it's been brilliant.

After lots of experiments with samples of granite in all sorts of colours, I discovered that the very dark granites show watermarks and you'd be constantly polishing them, the very light granites were quite porous so could stain. Nothing soaks into the quartz, despite it being white I haven't managed to ruin it yet. I've spilled all sorts - soy sauce, curry etc and it's been fine. Once a blob of curry sauce was on overnight without me realising and there was a pale yellow stain after cleaning but a squirt of diluted bleach and it was gone. There's no resealing to worry about and doesn't scratch or anything.

Hi Claire I love your kitchen too! I realise this discussion was from a while back but we are considering Unistone and I'm wondering if there's any difference maintenance-wise between the different finishes? Which is yours and is the polished look just a matter of aesthetics or is it harder wearing or less than their other finishes? Also have you ever put a hot pan down on it? We are also having a hob in the island and I'm sure it's going to happen sometime! Am even considering whether to put stainless steel bars to the left and right of the hob to guard against this....

I can only comment on my customer's choice. She had Quartz worktops and a Schock sink. She was pleased with it and did her homework before purchasing. She had white. Hard water is a nuisance. I can only suggest that you wipe the sink dry after each use.

To be honest, if you are looking for the disadvantages of Dekton, is because deep down you sympathise more with Quartz. End of the day it all depends on which you like the most. As most the answer have said, if you hit the edges with something heavy the Dekton will chip. It is resistant to stain and to heat, which is the main reason people go for it. It means that you don't need to worry about heat or stains. It is a print on the surface, so yes the groves and edges won't have the veins, unless you have the Dekton drop-down mounted as a book, so continuing the veins. But the grooves would not have the veins. Quartz is pretty resistant to stain and you can request the extra treatment. In terms of heat, it is quite resistant but temperature shocks can make it crack. So cold to hot, or hot pot when the surface is cold. It is still a bit porous so I wouldn't push it too much with the stains. Good luck with your project!

If you are having lodgers and then probable renters in-the future then as a landlady I would say go for the most durable work surface. Tenants will generally never be as careful with work surfaces and quartz while more attractive is sadly not as robust but is more expensive than compact laminate.

Sorry just thought I'd add that I don't use heat protectors or anything and it's been fine.
