How do you make a rented space feel like home?
Comments (38)We rent unfurnished, so always have our own furniture around us. I don't go in TOO much for the soft furnishings (rugs, cushions, curtains, throws), as they are cluttersome and really interefere with a low-maintenance life. Moreover, sadly, my posters, paintings and photographs have had to stay in storage for about five years, due to increasing fussiness by landlords/ -ladies about holes in the walls. HOWEVER, it is crucial to have ENOUGH of your own things around you, so that the web of YOUR things covers over a space which is, essentially, not yours. Minimalism has definite limits. Our last place had revolting dull mustard yellow walls, which definitely needed covering! Bookcases (with books!), a folding screen/ room divider, tension rods to create hanging rails, and one big rug (for the sitting room) come with us everywhere, like the interior of some sort of nomad's yurt! Seasonal and fresh decorations are another way to decorate a temporary home, and they leave only biodegradable waste, rather than broken MDF or shattered plastic! Leaf-skeletons on a string and rosehip-studded twigs (snap off the thorns!) for autumn (Fall). Holly, ivy and dried wildflowers for winter. Fresh wildflowers for spring and summer. Comments (7)forzaitalia- You should complain to the store that supplied the mattress - tell them that you want them to take up your case with the manufacturer and offer to email them pictures to support your case. Tell them that you want the manufacturer to refund the store the cost of the mattress so that you can purchase an alternate from them. I also love copper and the brassy gold colours.... it works beautifully on really dark walls like navy, charcoals and greys.. but the word opulent that you have used I think is a really good one... reason being that I think to really create opulence that is both beautiful and tasteful is where the choices really come into play... The image you have used is an excellent example... I'm not keen, think Keen as euphemism for...... :) but then see the image below as another example which I love... So for me it's not really the colour per se as the choice of said thing, and the use of the colour, material..... : )) I think gold can be opulent, tasteful, beautiful if it's not made to look gaudy, tacky and over the top... Think... liberal but not Liberace.. : ) )

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoFunnily enough I have just redone a small bedroom in a gold theme, but kept the gold to a vintage mirror frame & a vintage bateau vase, then toned it with pale honey walls & light oak laminate, & brilliant white woodwork.

In the right setting, a one-off feature item in a gold colour, such as a marble fireplace looks stunning!
Or for a more subtle look, why not have a bespoke made table top or vanity top in a pale marble with gold coloured veining such as the Calacatta Oro?
