Need inspiration for the front of my house and driveway!
Comments (43)This is a handsome house. First...symmetry. Can you make the front pillars the same height. I would lower the LH one to match RH. A strong iron railing along the LH side and in the small front piece LH. Keep front door a strong colour....dark green/blue, navy, whatever, and paint the iron railigs the same colout. Avoid lots of small pots...messy and lots to water. You could i) have a narrow raised bed along the RH wall between you and the next property planted with a mix of small evergreen shrubs and trailing plants..small Choysia Ternata, etc., There is a trailing euphorbia (Amagloides ?) which is sculptural but relaxed. ii) Acquire or have built two or three large tree pots. When they are empty, position them in various places, with bamboo canes, to see where they would work best, and how many you want. I would suggest something deciduous with autumn colour and blossom, like a prunus autumnalis; a crab apple; a quince on dwarf stock; a columnar flowering cherry,Prunus Amanogawa....the choice is huge. Avoid cottagey annuals and too much patchy, mixed planting. I would keep pots square, in harmony with the raised bed. This house is formal and urban. Keeo it elegant and with strong lines broken by the foliage and trailers. I needs beauty, not prettiness. cheers...See Moredriveway repairs - right of way - can we ask for donation towards it?
Comments (2)Legally, no. Although they have right of way, as you own the driveway the repair costs are down to you. However, the neighbours should hopefully offer to share costs with you as a gesture of goodwill given that they use the access. In short you can't refuse access / right if way, but they can refuse to contribute to the cost of repair. Do you know what the arrangement was with the previous owners? Did this come up in your searches? We have the same issue and our solicitor made a big deal about it, so we spoke to the vendor and the neighbours to find out what the agreement was before exchanging (currently everyone pays equal contribution to repairs). If not, speak to your neighbours and ask if they would be willing to contribute. The offer of a beer or two might soften the blow!...See MoreParking Dilemma Shared Driveway
Comments (12)Some great ideas to consider. Cheers everyone :) I like the idea of potentially halfing the garage space to accomodate a vehicle. Hopefully significantly less cost than full rebuild. I think the garage roof is in need of replacing anyways so denfinetly something to think about. Also it wouldn’t impact the greenhouse behind the garage and could still have the small front garden which looks nice from the front of the house. I am also intending to extend the rear of the house into an open plan kitchen / living area so the side porch may become redundent in the process and look a little odd. Also open to sacrificing the front garden as tab dracy mentioned for ease of access for visitors, delivers etc and once renovation works kick off I could even add a skip. Here’s a few more pictures for context...See MoreShared driveway - Complicated.
Comments (12)The fence/partition will go perpendicular to the garage ie down the line of my boundary as outlined in my deeds and indicated in my rough sketch, thus between mine and neighbour's parking spots. With a slight return so I can have some privacy from the gawping neighbour every time I go into my garage. The only shared part is approx 2m wide strip along all the back doors for vehicle access as indicated in the sketch. The other neighbours seem quite capable of not using my private park area to reverse /drive over as evidenced by tyre-marks during the snowy period. Incidentally my aggressive neighbour did not take his car out ONCE during the snow knowing that his use of my parking area for access would be clearly evident to all with his tyre marks. Anyhoo - I think I've picked up a couple of ideas for unifying the whole area if I use similar plantings/trellises etc on both sides and I will eventually mark my parking area with gravel or paving and then some sort of pathway across it....See MoreJonathan
