Comments (102)I'm feeling pleased to say I have now be later in life been enjoying some of the things I'd love to have, for some time so they don't count for my 'one thing I'm still hoping for..' I love my upmarket induction hob with timer that saves my food from my memory when distracted by a phone call for a chat-length of time; no day goes by without the thrill of pulling open my kitchen's larder cupboard where the contents are so visible and high space is utilised. Comments (102)Remember that Rome wasn't built in a day.. Neither the house you want to make a home... If the house feels right. With your Head and your heart, location. Then if it's the house for you it will work.. Move in and adjust each day... Yes you can put your Mark on the house, yes it will be your HOME... But live with it for at least a short while.. Don't be hasty to paint.. See where the sunshine..shines...See where it makes dull on a dark day...So you Can add a mirror maybe to reflect the daylight.. Don't make the pennies stretch any further than they are.. Remember that sadly the bills have to come first..!!!.... Improvise pieces to fit and...if you have to save for the right item....Then save..!!! it will be more practical in the end , rather than buying for the sake of it and having to buy another a few months down the line... Don't fill every room with furniture.... My biggest mistake... Use a piece like a sideboard and think practically the uses.... Is it big enough.. One more draw or cupboard would have better than two smaller ones...don't be afraid to add old stuff that we all now reuse..paint it ...add your own art work... It's a long journey.. To find the destination of all your dreams... And when you feel you have achieved what you have done...then sit back and enjoy all your hard work. And live in your HOME... Enjoy. Relax.. Comments (13)Hi Mr Mr, that clarifies things. It would seem that if you go ahead with stairs from the hall then you will lose the smallest bedroom upstairs, presumably currently occupied by the youngest in the family? If so, then do you intend moving them downstairs or will you take the plunge and move yourselves into a new master bedroom downstairs? What will happen to the existing landing at the top of the stair from the dining room - could it be used to replace the lost bedroom? Could it be incorporated into one of the other bedrooms? Could it become a study [if needed]? When we extended a few years ago we took the opportunity to merge two existing bedrooms to give one larger room. The new extension provided two more bedrooms and we 'lost' one other original bedroom to become a 'landing library' open to the staircase so, in effect, a large gallery. In this way we went from a conventional 4 bed to a much larger 4 bed plus library. The house is just so much more usable in its new format. You will usually find that upstairs walls are easily moved as they are non load bearing. However, I am sure most people would agree that you should make the house suit your needs. It is well worth sitting down with a pen and paper and listing what you'd really like to achieve from the building work. If you are planning on this being a long term home then I'd take this opportunity to 'future proof' the layout for you and your family. If you are looking for resale in the foreseeable future then investing the minimum amount to get your kitchen diner is probably the way forward. Either way, good luck. P.S. given a choice, I'd still keep the stairs away from the kitchen smells... but see what the consensus is from the Houzz community....See More
