My house is Grade2 listed but the sitting room is half in the original part of the house (with original floor boards) and half in an extension with a modern chipboard floor. At present the whole area has been carpeted on top of hardboard. I’d like to get rid of the old carpet and unify the space with a new engineered oak flooring. However, as the house is listed, I cannot damage the original floorboards in any way. My question - hopefully for a professional who has experience of this problem - is whether a new floor could be laid on top of the current hardboard? If not and the hardboard has to be lifted, could new boards be laid over the original boards using the floating method? Many thanks.

Also - set your expectations very low. My experience of dealing with listed building people is that they are generally obstructive. In an ideal world they would help by giving clear guidance about what will and won’t be allowed but I think you will find them incompetent and unable to make any decision in a timely fashion, unable to understand the role of modern materials to protect these buildings long term, and you will find them paralysed by fear of doing something wrong and so reluctant to agree to any changes what so ever.
