Dining room - Need help!

I live in a small London apartment where the dining and living room is one room. The living room side is styled contemporary with Asian accents - beautiful hand crafted rosewood coffee table and oriental chairs and persian rugs. I am struggling with dining table options. I have a life size Thai Buddha I want to showcase, and also a persian rug. I am reluctant to get a woody dining table as it will look too heavy, plus take away from the furniture already in the room. I thought a glass dining table will allow the beautiful rug to show underneath plus wont look so heavy. I wish there were more brass/copper tables out there, but I can't find any. I need it to be inviting, and can dress up or down, but also allow me to work at the table occasionally, so comfy chairs are a must. I would love some dining table and dining chair ideas, Houzz friends! Help!

Hi. How big is the space? I've found 2 which I think will go in terms of design but they're not particularly cheap (!) and i think they'll be too big. The first is from Shropshire design and the 2nd pavillion Broadway. I know you said you didn't want wood but have you thought of something similar in style to an altar table, maybe a modern version which is far simpler or an Asian farmhouse table ( look at place like indigo, shimu etc). You would still see the rug given the leg style. Would that be wide enough? How many do you need to seat? You could also consider a bench at the back that tucks under the table. I would then add a really large mirror on that ŵall to increase the feeling of space

I tried to place furniture in your room, but do not know where is window or not. So I got what I got. I am sure the round dining table will be better. I just did not have it in my software. Try to move two sofas on different direction. may be both on the corner would be better. Round table is on other corner.

Hi Charlotte, It depends on how you use the space currently or how your envisage using it. It looks like there is quite a bit of space in front of the bay window, so I would move the dining table a bit closer to the window. In terms of the play area it looks like your children congregate on the opposite side of the room? If so I would make this space theirs by adding this simple storage by IKEA where you toys can be stored easily in baskets. In terms of the rest of the look and feel I would avoid decorating the whole room with bright colours etc. You can of course make it work so that you can have accents in the accessories which co-incide with the children's toys. e.g. brightly coloured vase. A dark brown frame one with a rattan seat or a cushion pad or could go a bit funkier & do a clear acrylic chair (maybe too much ?) One thing I would do in your space would be to lighten up the cushions on the sofa so something like cream as it looks a really nice space. Maybe a bowl of low flowers on the coffee table too.

Acrylic chairs may be out there for me. But simple frame ones I think might be better than upholstered back ones? Do you think cream chairs or grey ones? Thank you!

@minnie101 I love both of these! But they are, as you say, frightfully expensive. The space fits both of these tables fine. I used to have 80cm deep by a 2 meter wide table that fit well. I need to "steal" version of these splurge tables. I would ideally like to seat 6. 4 minimum. I agree about the mirror - what a great idea! Thank you. I will look at indigo and shimu.

I know this might sound silly, but have you sat at a glass dining table?
I think they look stunning and nearly bought one in the past. Now I'm glad I didn't. I feel very exposed sitting at glass tables, especially with people I don't know well. It's an odd experience!
It might just be me being strange, but I'd recommend you test one out in store before committing. Go with someone so they can sit opposite you. Just saying...

@Victoria Yes. I have thought that. But the only people that come over are to this apartment are very close to me. So i am good with a glass table. Thank you though for bringing to my attention!

I like the first table you posted & then add the grey chairs as I prefer rectangular tables to round but that's just my personal choice.

Hi. Maybe something like the Kartell chair. I think this may be a little too much but maybe something along these lines but less solid black and slightly simpler!I must admit I keep looking at the space and thinking a smaller table is needed but I must be out re the scale of things! I hadn't thought about glass tables before but do take Victoria's point!! I also like your first table. maybe you could mix it with chairs that have a slightly oriental look?

@Minnie101 the entire room (including the living room is 5.2mx 3.6m or 17'1x 11'10ft). A 2m table will work length wise at a maximum, because there needs to be room to add chairs, etc. and then there is my large Buddha. I think I am going with the first table I posted (dimensions Overall: 75cm H x 95cm W x 180cm L). And I think I am going with these chairs . Will add a gold mirror on the wall as you suggested and change upgrade the light fixture to add some glamour. And, also swap out for cream cushions on the sofa. Thoughts? THANK YOU SO MUCH. Your comments are really helping me narrow this down!

Hello.

I would suggest a glass dining table but you would have to paint your entire room to a brighter colour so that it matches the dinning table, this can cost you alot more money though. Another suggestion would be an aluminium round dinning table, a brown colour perharps? Because that would fit best with the colour of your room.

I think the table and chairs will look good. I can't see the existing light but something with some glamour will look good. Or a drum pendant with a warm metallic lining may also work. As you're going for a modern table, perhaps just add an old chinese bowl etc in the middle of the table? Re cushions, look at picking up the light colours in both/either of the rugs. You could also paint the walls in one of these colours which will really make the rugs stand out. I think I can see pale pinks, green, grey, cream etc but not too sure!

I have decided on this. It is SO different to how i started out. But it's light, reflective, fun and not heavy. What are your thoughts?
