Would a change if wall colour help with flooor problem?
We converted a partial basement to our kitchen. The room is approx 20 feet square plus a small bay with french doors. It's quite eclectic - we have used old cupboards painted Hardwick White, the worksurface is reclaimed slate, the walls are white with splashes of Berrington Blue and there is a large black cast iron fireplace (working) in situ.The problem is the floor. We were persuaded to lay pale limestone to increase the sense of light. It was fine when it went down but now all the fossils are showing and it's turned a horrible beigey brown. I can't replace it as it was ridiculously expensive. Would changing the wall colour from white detract from it and somehow minimise its effect? If yes what colour would be best. Grateful for your help. Thanks ps apologies for the pics. They are all I could find to show the colours/feature. The floor is vile but it doesn't look it here. Think sludge!!!

10 years agoHi. Thanks for responding. The floor is that shown in the pictures above. It's overall appearance is much more browny/beige with strong brown veins appearing than the photos show. I've attached another one which has been taken closer to the floor. I was trying to show it in relation to the colours in situ.

Comments (10)Hi. An interesting room. The tall ceilings are an asset. However the mantle and higher shelf are making it feel squat. I would suggest that you remove the shelf around the chimney breast completely and move the mantel up. Paint the mantle, the shelves around the other walls and the skirting boards a soft white. Also paint the whole of the chimney breast white. Paint the remaining walls below and above the shelves a soft pale grey. This will give the room "height". Fit white bookshelves in the alcoves below the shelves only. Make the shelves nice and deep in order that you can put a couple of matching blue and white Chinese style urns on top of the shelves to add balance and an illusion of height to the shelves. Now place a large modern painting, not a mirror, above the mantel midway with the ceiling with a pale grey frame. This should make the room feel lighter and more interesting. Good Luck. Comments (20)Here are a few photos of the finished, updated kitchen. We decided to paint the chimney beast in moles breath to coordinate with the dresser on the opposite wall, the vintage mirror backsplash was beautifully made and fitted by Mirrorworks in Shropshire, using toughened glass. The curtains are from the Villa Nova range by Romo. As the kitchen is an overall grey finish with the walls a delicate cream colour, F and B's Pointing, we have used mustard and teal as an accent colour. Comments (26)Re the layout - I didn’t think there would be much space in front of the WM if I had them all across the back. Seemed a bit cramped and can’t bend over to get to things? Maybe not - will have to have a think on that! It’s not the concrete outside that was an issue as that was all dug up for drains to go in and has now been put back. I think it was on the other side of the wall in the floor? So if they put the pipe under the floor, the wall there was too thick to core out. He was at it for some time and gave up, ha ha. Will re investigate though! Re radiator - I put one there (standard rad and not a towel warmer) because ... there is no heating that side of the kitchen at all and the small one puts out quite a lot of heat. So we could leave the sliding door open to keep that area warm (and especially in winter if the dogs sleep in that room) That was it really. Why wouldn’t it work there though?
