Here is our existing kitchen of 10 years. We are painting the cupboards F&B Purbeck stone and the separate dresser, Mole's breath. The tiles are being removed and not replaced, and a small black granite upstand fitted to match the whole granite work surface. We are painting the walls and ceiling F&B Pointing, a delicate cream/white colour. We would like to put a glass splash back to cover the wall behind the oven but cannot decide on a suitable colour and also curtains around the french doors. Help!

11 years agoHow about a plum/aubergine or if you think that would be too dark how about an aged mirror or silver leaf glass splash back?

Comments (2)Hi Koalabean, What a lovely feature to have in your house! With staining beech wood veneer in a mahogany colour, there is a very specific method to do this where you need to sand the whole surface down before painting with the correct paint type. Comments (5)Hi Sass, without knowing exactly what treatment / process was applied to your floor I may not be advising you correctly.... but my understanding of a smoked effect via fuming / smoking is that it has been exposed to ammonia gas. The ammonia reacts with the natural tannins in the wood and brings out usually a greyish brown colour. Because the intensity of the reaction to the ammonia depends on the tannin content of the wood, each floor and every floorboard will react differently from the next. In a nutshell if this was the process - variation is inevitable as tannin content can vary dramatically, and it varies quite a bit even within the same log, depending on which part is used. I would have expected the final colouration to have taken effect before the flooring was delivered and if we were to produce a floor with potentially changeable colouration it would not be delivered until the final colour had been achieved as it would be similar to buying a' lucky dip floor'. Comments (0)Has anybody any had any experience of this? Had some new windows fitted a couple of months and when I put the old white blinds back up they appeared yellow/cream from the outside. Given the fact we had building work done I just presumed the were filthy with dust, highlighted by the new white window frames. Have since had new white shutters fitted (see photo) and still have the same issue. I’m not naive enough to think they would match the same white as the window outside but is this acceptable? Due to their energy efficiency the fitter is trying to tell me these types of new windows will forever more make white blinds look yellow/cream....See More

PRO11 years agoHi Doctorbobs, we've given this some thought and whilst we love the aubergine look that's been suggested, we love the idea of blue even more. The right shade, with a good hint of grey in it, will tie your theme altogether and curtains in a vertical stripe will add such a lovely grandeur!
As you can see from this Festival Olive Green, different widths of stripes look lovely and they really help to elongate the wall, but we really want to catch your attention with the Hove China Blue curtains.

- 10 years agoHere are a few photos of the finished, updated kitchen. We decided to paint the chimney beast in moles breath to coordinate with the dresser on the opposite wall, the vintage mirror backsplash was beautifully made and fitted by Mirrorworks in Shropshire, using toughened glass. The curtains are from the Villa Nova range by Romo. As the kitchen is an overall grey finish with the walls a delicate cream colour, F and B's Pointing, we have used mustard and teal as an accent colour. We will add other items as we find them

- 10 years agoHere is the finished updated kitchen. We decided to paint the chimney breast in Mole's breath to match the dresser facing it. The backsplash is a vintage sparkle toughened glass mirror made by Mirrorworks in Shropshire. Curtains are from the Villa Nova range by Romo. We will add further mustard coloured accent accessories as we find them. The whole kitchen is much lighter and has a more modern feel. We think the cost of the update is about 10% of the original cost.
