Hi Laura, You've received many suggestions and some have been quite good. Particularly useful are the photos above of the French pied a terre with the slim line cabinets on one side. If you need somewhere to eat, you can swap the table and chairs for a bar and stools with slim cabinets either side. And don't worry about losing the panel radiator. Your plumber can install a hydronic plinth heater that connects into your central heating. I think the key to your colour scheme should start with your new cooker. Have you considered beige cabinet doors in high gloss? They would make your range look integrated and help reflect light around the room. Polished black granite (or laminate) worktop will pick up the black trim on the cooker. The arched lower door of the cooker points toward a more traditional or transitional look for a cooker hood (black) or an integrated hood. Beige and black tiles would keep the walls of the working area scrubbable. Look at metro tiles for a high gloss finish or patchwork tiles for some retro designs. Lastly, change over to LED lighting with warm white lamps. Avoid harsh white light overhead, but don't forget worktop lighting. Good luck and have fun.

Here's a thought - I have two teenage kids and I have never known them or anyone elses kids to play in a "playroom" for more than half an hour especially on their own - they always gravitate to where you are! and will end up building lego on the kitchen table etc. and in the end you are happier having them "in sight" (Unless there is a host of other kids at your house as well.) So my advice would be to not lose valuable space to a designated playroom. Think about the activities you and your partner enjoy too! Do they need some designated space? It could be a room where a lot of toys are stored, sure (and its nice to close the door on it) but could it also be a room where the piano/craft table/office/homework desk/drum kit etc also live.

Hey everyone I'm in a bit of a design pickle and would love to tap into your collective brilliance! I'm trying to refurbish my new home and I've hit a wall. I'm hoping you can offer some fresh perspectives and creative solutions. Essentially I'm unsure whether to simply re-jig the layout downstairs or extend. And if / how to extend upstairs to increase bedroom space/give us a nice master bedroom. There is a flat roof above the utility and playroom - and garage - which may lend themselves to extensions. There is also an orangery with a roof lantern which is a bit high and obscures the view from the bedroom above. 1) I'd like to have an open plan family / living / dining area downstairs with a separate 'cosy' lounge area for evenings (current dining room isn't used) 2) Re-jigging the layout so the utility doesn't have a corridor feel between the kitchen and playroom is a consideration. And so the playroom is more connected to the main living areas 3) The study is currently a very dark room so relocating it would be nice 4) I'd really like to have a view of the garden from the front door but not sure if this is possible 5) I need more space for laundry/shoes, etc. 6) A pantry cupboard for the kitchen would be nice! 7) The fourth bedroom is very small, ideally I want 4 if not 5 decent bedrooms 8) We have a nice garden, it would be good to make the most of the aspect from the back of the house. What would you do which is sensible and pragmatic - as I understand that extensions are not cheap these days! Thank you!
