I have an old wood kitchen about to be remodelled. Do not know whether to go Modern Shaker or high gloss?. Although the house is bright and airy, kitchen north facing so do not know whether to go with white/ivory/cream.. Just not sure what i like in kitchens anymore modern shaker or gloss! House is classically modern, although we have just put a minimalistic downstairs cloakroom in white and grey. Panelled white gloss doors throughout and polished chrome light switches and handles just been put in.Light airy house but so confused about kitchen. Modern Shaker or Gloss? Help!!

White and grey can go in a north facing room if you add warm elements like maybe an orange cooker ! If you like the grey and white look !

A toilet can be off the kitchen. There is no need for a separating lobby any more, that went out a number of years ago. Planning is different from Building Control. Your local Planning office will have no jurisdiction over the insides of your home unless its a listed building. Building control will only need to be involved with something like this if you are making structural alterations requiring steel work. As long as you use certified and Insured contractors for all the electrical work its doubtful you'd need to involve Building Control. However; The w.c. must have its own hand wash sink, using the kitchen sink is not acceptable under current Building Regulations. The w.c. must be fitted with its own 100mm vent, this will be operated by the light switch and should have a minimum 15 minute overrun. Windows are ok, but there is the risk of the wind blowing in the wrong direction and pushing air into the kitchen instead of drawing it outside. The door should open outwards if this is the only downstairs loo. This is a safety feature as d/s toilets should be disabled friendly, so if someone has an incident or fall in there they wont be trapped behind the door. I'm assuming as its an existing w.c. you've probably got most of this covered already.

Personally I would love to see a house plan in order to see how these spaces relate to the rest of the house and garden. If you are seriously thinking about taking down walls it might be worth thinking about if the kitchen is going to stay in the same space if windows and doors might be changes for the better and how you get to your garden. My observation so far is that the kitchen is a cut through from the dining to the utility meaning that the long wall opposite the window can't easily be fitted and this would be the obvious place for the tall items like the fridge. It seems unnecessary to have two tables in the space. There is no obvious route to the garden, the utility room seems dark but the total space seems generous which gives loads of possibilities. Lastly you seem to have specified the practical things like the dishwasher and fridge but you should think about what you would like to be able to do with the space........ For instance- think about if you want a room to socialise in or to keep an eye on small children or room for hobbies or work? Lastly whereabouts do you live and do you know your budget? perhaps someone can recommend a kitchen showroom near you.

Like that idea. We originally thought about having the wall out and pantry taken out and putting the kitchen that end and having a dining are the end where the kitchen is at the moment. It would be a really big area and would be lovely but we have had some ridiculously high quotes so don't think it's really worth doing it, so just trying to think of ways around it.

If they're separate rooms I think they can differ the same as any other room in the house as long as it's a cohesive look. You could always go for the same cabinets but different complementary colours. You may also want a different flooring for the utility if it's likely to get very dirty and wet. You might also consider a different and cheaper worktop for the utility if you don't need to consider stains or heat resistance for example. i think either or Is fine though :)

If it's just goi g to be remodeled.. Reuse your cabinets and doors.. Old wood is .. If in good condition better than some of today's materials... Maybe two- tone areas wood and creams can the wood be cleaned or stained . The grain highlighted... (If it a it broke don't fix it.). Regarding colours paint some boards or papers and put up around the room. Put in darker areas and see what the natural light offers you day and night... Also looking through some of the photos on here, can help.. Pick out the bits you like and inter change ideas .. Good luck in your project... Let it evolve with at least some of your character, charm. And above all make it liveable. Loveable. It has to please you and your life .. Not to please any one else.. You have to use it everyday ..

I can make shaker doors(traditional or modern look) so you can keep units and by doing that you will save a lot plus you will gain brand new kitchen

A favourite of mine is to go for a two tone colour and use the colours chalk and charcoal. I am a big fan of the Georgian shaker style kitchens and preferably in-frame but that is where your money goes!

Have you got any photos? Would be great to see what your kitchen looks like at the moment.
