What would you most like to change about your kitchen?

Whether you've lived in your home for many years or just moved in, you often dream of ways to improve it. Since we spend a lot of time in our kitchens, perhaps this is the space we want to change the most.

So thinking about your kitchen, which update/improvement is on your to-do or wish list?

Hi paulineewilson, to add more interest, you could possible consider lifting a paving slab here and there that won't compromise the main areas you would walk on regularly. Where you've chosen to lift a slab, you could add some fragrant plants such as lavender or herbs that tolerate being trodden on occasionally. The spare slab you've lifted could then be placed further away from your house to create another planting square. into this you could plant one of those tall pencil-thin Italian evergreen trees. Your patio would gain more 3D interest if you used a few plants that are tall and narrow and evergreen. Tall evergreens provide shade in summer and winter interest. I would check with your garden centre the distance you should plant these Italian evergreens trees cannot damage buildings or drains with roots. I'd also perhaps consider making the table area of your patio a curved semi-circle shape rather than have 90 degree angles. I am sure you will enjoy tweaking your patio as the basic design is lovely!

To add to my earlier comment, I think my individualism epitomises the very essence of being a true Brit. I'm not a slave to trends, just go with my heart and hope my design ideas will come together in some sort of coherent way. There's pride in that in spades, and we're a proud nation, aren't we?!

Ironing. I don't. As others have mentioned, I also take clothes straight out of the tumble dryer and fold nicely. Since I finished with the city job, 10 yrs ago, am now resident in snowy N Yorkshire and run a small cheese making business I am lucky that I no longer have to wear shirts or ultra smart clothes for work, just a polo shirt, jeans and jumper. Actually no longer own an iron. Dusting too. Hate it. Also, my vacuum cleaner is afraid of heights so seldom makes it upstairs. Am beginning to think I am getting slovenly in my old age.

The size! It's just about 7 sq.m. and we don't have a separate pantry, and I cook a lot and I love to have all the possible ingredients already in my storage, so I constantly lack space.

So, as changing the size is not possible, I'm planning to replace all the cabinetry with the new one, adding more clever storage solution and workspace. Also I'm concidering squeezing the tiniest breakfast tableboard to be able to drink a cup of tea and eat a bowl of cereals with my daughter in the morning. Not sure yet how I'm going to manage that.

the layout is a must for our kitchen but also the decor. it's north facing but we have black tiles on the floor, a black counter top & dark green tiled splashback. all these things just suck the light right out of the room. when we eventually do it i want all light & fresh. maybe a yellow splashback. :)

Plan to knock through from the kitchen to the dining room but use the new larger space solely for the kitchen. Just haven't found a design that's 'the one' as yet...I know what I want but there are too many doors to other areas of the house that are causing problems!!

The splashback needs changing, just not sure what to replace it with. And yes, a new integrated fridge freezer at some point.

The lack of bench space, and I'm not sure which category of the poll that fits into. Layout maybe, since we'll need to move things around to make it work. Our kitchen is enormous, but it's all storage - one whole wall is floor to ceiling pantry-style cabinets. On the other all the stovetop and the sink take up a full half of the bench top, so there is just enough room for one chopping board and bowl on what's left when you are cooking.

The crazy thing is, it's not even a tiny galley kitchen, but the space in between the two walls is only just big enough to squeeze an island in, so we are trying to decide between being cramped, or knocking down walls and completely remodelling. Can't quite bring ourselves to pull the trigger on the latter, though, as all the cabinets and cupboard are in great shape.

The main thing I think I can do is get the cooker removed and new cooker put in on the other side of the room. So I won't bump into table every time I cook anything.

I recently moved into a 1930's Craftsman home that has a kitchen with 4 entry ways ... trying to wrap my head around how to approach design aspect that is having to be built around a french door fridge we had in our last house (which we had fitted with ikea ) . Ductwork for heating thru walls is making the potion of opening it up impossible. I can't wait to have time to play with ikea planning tool over the holidays!

In my dreams I'd like a second dishwasher but in reality I would settle for rehanging the brick style wallpaper on the kind of pillar between the French doors and the tall boiler/larder cupboard. It is just two lengths of paper but they weren't matched properly and the mismatch screams at me, not literally, but every time I see it I shudder.

I would have replaced some equipment and furniture. Ideally, I would like all the furniture of one model, darker. I also like the kitchen island, this is a very cool thing.
