Need help with reception room

Hi all:

We are buying furniture for our reception room and are having a lot of trouble designing the space. Couple questions for those out there:

1) we JUST bought the leather couch and... I am not sure. Is it too big and brown?

2) how should we organise the TV? We were thinking of buying a nice sideboard. Any thoughts?

Hi. The sofa is fine. I'd just move the other sofa up a few inches/a foot so you can move the other one out of the bay slightly. Lighten up the sofa by adding patterned cushions in the other sofa and chair colour. Tv's look nice on sideboards so you can either add accessories on the sideboard or art to the ŵall so as to "disguise" the tv but I can't really see what it's stood on at the moment. I do think a coffee table would look also nice with accessories on to bring furniture into the middle of the room

Hi Mutaha2010, I would definitely love to see how you get on with dressing the room, so please post up some pics when you’ve finished. With regards to the layout of your room, the positioning you have at the moment works well for the space. However, if you definitely feel like change, your suggestion of swapping the larger sofa position with the two arm chairs would work perfectly. You will create an inviting corner sofa shape with the two sofas at a right angle to each other. With this new layout in mind, I would keep your lovely rug in the same position, but rotate the coffee table so that it becomes parallel with the window and sofa. Decorative wall art pieces are fab additions for any room. A designer tip when hanging items such as pictures, clocks and mirrors, is to keep the measurement from the floor to the piece consistent throughout the room. By using this method, your eyes will be effortlessly drawn around the space. I hope that this helps, and wishing you the best of luck with your project! Hi there, Great purchases - I love the mirrors and the rug is just beautiful. Would you consider repainting the walls? I love the colour of the wall and sofas individually, but as they are similar the furniture gets a bit lost in the walls which lessens the impact of it on the eye! Did you have any material or colour in mind for a new coffee/side table?

There is unlikely to be any reason why you cannot do this. You will need to consult a structural engineer who will do the calculations for the size of RSJ required. You will then need to submit your plans as your 'building regulations drawings' to the local Building Control as this is a notifiable alteration. Your builder or designer can do this for you. The Building Inspector will need to first approve the plans and calculations and then make a site inspection after the opening has been made and the steel is in place, but before you plaster over it.
