We typically tell pet owners to avoid looped carpeting. Pets can get their nails snagged or pull out the loops, fraying the carpet.

A nylon or polyester Frieze would be a great choice for a durable and stain resistant carpeting. The tighter the twists the more durable it will be.

When I had a store I was truthful with customer because I wanted them to return for years to come.

I told them what you read on a label tag on the back is what legal evidence you can rely on. Watch certain words like " Limited guarantee" that is usually small print and long enough people don't have the time to read or understand. Read though.

Stay with nylon! Not blended with polyester. Any type of polyester won't last long.

Halls, stairs are not guaranteed or areas like 5x5 areas like bathroom where hair spray my land on one spot. Plus matting of carpet also is not in a guarantee. Wear guarantee means yarn won't wear down more than 10 percent. Does not have nothing to do with wear guarantee because it is matted and polyester is the worst for loosening nap strains and matting. You will loose if you go to court and they know that.

But if a dealer wants to tell you they will guarantee all that is warned here GREAT FOR YOU. just tell him to write it all down on contract and sign it under that. (Make sure it is signed by owner of store) if worker he might not be there when you start to notice it's matting (which is not guaranteed) but it is if owner signed that he guaranteed it personally.

What is written and signed is telling you have a honest person your dealing with and this and no more is guaranteed. Can promise the world but if it is not in writing leave this dishonest store. Also don't forget to not to observe tricky words like: limited, might, may, etc.

Padding you want a rebond pad about 8 pound and on stairs I would put one half inch nylon fiber pad it is firmer so won't wear on nose of step plus makes it less trip proof for kids and older folks like me. Remember stairs will only last half as long as your carpet in main rooms so keep all step size carpet and if you can afford it buy more carpet for steps to install later when carpet looks bad on steps but the other carpet still looks good. It takes a 12' x 6' 2" to do 12 steps.

Also with loop pile carpet if you get a loop pull and it is loose on carpet cut it even with top of carpet so it does not run continuous across your carpet. 1 yarn loops all the way across your carpet. Plus always clean your vacuum bar so any string doesn't catch and pull your carpet yarn. It usually takes 20 pounds of pressure to pull out a carpet yarn.

Stainmaster nylon will help on soiling around pets and kiddos. And remember oil from you, your kids, pets from your body or pet hair draws dust and dirt and holds it in walk areas (this causes matting in any carpet) so I advise dry cleaning your carpet once a year and also you don't hurt carpet by vacuuming but can hurt it by NOT vacuuming.

I can't say enough good things about Smartstrand carpet. I've had it in 3 homes (one with an elderly dog that had accidents) and stairs, and when I moved out, I just vacuumed and it still looked new. No stains, no matting on stairs. A client of mine put white smartstrand in their house with 3 toddlers and when they moved almost 3 yrs later it still looked new. There is a youtube video where they put it in a rhinos pen for 2 weeks, removed it and cleaned it and it still looked new.

When I retired 8 pound was the highest as long as you don't have higher than 1/2 " high otherwise it won't hook on track strip and you'll loose its stretch. The denser it is (pounds) the better it will wear plus a power stretch carpet will be around 500 pounds of pressure across a room also makes carpet last longer. But matting or staining has nothing to do with wear that is damaged by the type of yarn.
