POLL: Eggs - free-range or caged?
Comments (31)Gerry, yes, you may well be right and I may be a little hard on the hobby chicken keepers. However, some of them don't seem to live in the real world of food production if their wild statements are anything to go by. The "welfare lobby" fulfils a very useful function by keeping pressure on the government to keep reviewing management standards. This is very apparent in the UK where, I believe, whilst we are not perfect, we do have a good balance between high production and welfare of the animal. Our farmers frequently complain that the standards they have to meet are higher than those observed on the continent. Apart from our own burgeoning population, India and China have about 2.5 billion people to feed - not easy and they don't want to be living on just rice and nut roasts.I have nothing at all against organic food whether it be bread or meat and it often tastes so much better. However, it is expensive and difficult to produce in quantity. For example, if someone is able to produce a grass which, like legumes, can fix nitrogen, then we will, if you pardon the phrase, "be on the pig's back" to some degree. Until then we must struggle on. Food security is important for every country. Post World War II it was the policy of our government to be self sufficient in food and we more or less achieved that by the end of the century. We could discard this policy and import a lot of meat from Brazil and Argentina, both of which countries can finish beef in the great outdoors (on grass). However, this would destroy our own beef industry and leave us very vulnerable. Like the title of a book by the late Enoch Powell - no easy answers!...See MoreHelp on a Compact Kitchen
Comments (6)To make the most of corner cupboards, either get a blind corner with LeMans pull out or if you're on a tight budget, stick to L shaped corner cupboards so that you can still get to the back and make the space usable rather than just available. Block your tall units together away from the window to make the most of the light and use a light coloured worktop to bounce the light into the room. If you still wanted to use colour (why have a boring kitchen) you can be bold on the base units if you keep the wall units a light colour. Using downlights on the wall cupboards will bring task lighting where you need it most and if you put them on a separate electrical circuit to your ceiling lights, they can create a beautiful atmosphere to your kitchen in the evenings....See MoreGood Mid Range Budget Quality Bathroom Sanitary Ware Make?
Comments (6)Just to flag to you - the so-called "lifetime guarantee" offered by Bathstore (and similar guarantees offered by other "sheds") is not a true lifetime guarantee - the actual length of guarantee ranges very widely on different products, so while ceramic Sanitaryware is 30 years, furniture is only 2-5 years and taps only 10 years. Furthermore, virtually all products have various exclusions - with taps, for example, the cartridges (the part most likely to fail and cause leaks) are only guaranteed for 1 year - considerably less than the average or better products in the market. Cisterns in WCs (again the most likely component to fail) are only covered for 2 years. Full details can be found here, if you want more info. Unfortunately, this sort of misleading marketing is more common than I would like, particularly among the larger chains. Feedback from customers to us has also indicated that getting some of these larger companies to honour their guarantees can also be a difficult business at times. Dealing with a smaller independent, they are more likely to deal with companies they know will have fewer quality issues and, where necessary, will honour their commitments (we can't afford the time, effort or risk to our reputation to do otherwise) and will normally "go the extra mile" to keep customers happy. There is, of course, a place for all of us in the market, but I really do urge you to do your homework and know what you are really buying if you deal with the national companies....See MoreHelp with canopy extractor
Comments (14)Perhaps look for a ceiling extractor instead of a canopy-unit (to build into the canopy)? These often require less height and the pipe can be placed on the side (left, right, back). Some have only remote control, others have buttons too. But plenty of build-in/undermount units have the option to place the motor max.3m away from the unit (please do regard accessibility though). A 15cm pipe would be sufficient. If the canopy is wider then the stove, you could add two leds on either side of the extraxtor unit. They could have their own switch, but a good electrician (that works with kitchen appliances often) can hook them on the on-switch of the unit (but then you can only use them with the unit on). Sidenote: A recirculation unit needs to be installed together with an exteractor fan to remove moist from the home. We use them in modern homes that have ventilation systems. Just an example: Novy Mini Pure'line...See More- 10 years ago
