Victorian Range

We have just found this original 1890's range cooker that has been boarded up for over 50 years. Does anyone know how we go about restoring it as we think it would be a lovely feature in our dining room.

Comments (15)Wow what a beautiful house !! That red carpet is soaking up all the light, once that's gone it will make a huge difference. Maybe then paint the stairs white or an old white, or a light coloured carpet. I would keep the Lincrusta, unless you dislike it, it adds period drama and texture, and again paint it off white. Wickes have a surprisingly interesting range of colours too, cheaper than F&B. The curtain probably stops a draught, I would get a huge white vintage French linen sheet, £60ish on eBay, and possibly line and interline it. After all that if it still seems dark, you may consider painting the wood panelling, shame but it could look great ! Comments (4)Well now, that needs a bit assistance and some life injected into it doesn't it! Yes it's a dire plan, However, i do feel it could quite cheaply be improved. Let's work with the grey and the beautiful rustic brown of the wooden doors. I can't see a pic of the sink, but it will work well with the theme. I'd bang out all the cupboards on the cooker side and construct out of reclaimed wood an 'open kitchen' with shelving top and bottom. You can then open up the corner and create a lot more space. Excuse the rudimentary 'ms paint plan', but hopefully you'll get the idea. You can add big old baskets if you wish, coloured pots and pans, all sorts to add a splash of colour and warmth. Paint the cupboards on the bottom a good dark grey to compliment the Stove and get a bit of depth going. I love the idea of the mustard and it works brilliantly with grey. I'd have the same dark grey of the kitchen units on the range wall, with a mustard back drop and more rustic shelves. The vinyl flooring idea of yours is great, warmer to walk on, easily cleaned and affordable. Comments (15)I don't really understand the "walk through cupboard into larder space". The plan just shows storage either side, would you not be better just having a wide larder unit? Agree with Jonathan re range and integrating fridge. Only on the assumption you won't be using both dishwashers at the same time, I might swap the one in the corner with the bin (so you're not dripping mess on the floor and DW's in corners are trickier as you can only stand to one side to stack etc) and move the other DW to the island but also swap the side of the drawers. It would be a major trip hazard though if you do use at the same time :) Given you have 2 DW's do you need an extra fridge in the utility? something like Little Greene French grey/pale may work for units, which is a Victorian paint colour. You could have oak on the island although it's obviously not as practical as Quartz etc. i think a butlers sink would also be more in keeping?...See More- 10 years ago

So lucky, its beautiful! If its going to be decorative only, then I highly recommend Liberon iron paste. Inexpensive and goes very far for a small tin. Gives a gorgeous, classic dark pewter finish. I've reconditioned quite a few extremely rusty cast iron pieces using this. If you plan to use it as a working oven, it will have to be zeebrite or stovax though. Couple of before and after photos added. The camera reflects the light, it's sometimes almost black in other lights.
