Hello, also consider which way your extension faces...e.g. north or south facing etc, if north facing, I think 2 big square windows ( perhaps SK08 or UK08 size as you have a wide house ) will let in more light. If you have 2 huge ones for south facing and also sliding doors, it could get very hot in the summer. I'm in the middle of my extension 3m x 5m , north facing garden, I have 3 velux MK08 which is 78cmx140cm, I've always liked the look of 3 windows instead of 2 but after they were installed I had second thoughts about whether I should have gone for 2 huge square ones instead as I also didn't take into account that we've have just had a dormer loft conversion completed, it takes a little longer for the light to come over to the back of the garden. Looking at your plan, you could have 3xPK08 94cmx140cm. The edge of the middle velux will be in line with where your sliding doors starts so that could look nice. Or if you have 2, you could have the edge of the second velux starting where the sliding door starts? I wouldn't go shorter than 140cm in length because when you are standing far inside, you want to see more window, if you go shorter, the windows will be 'hidden' behind the steel beams, make sure your builder install them so that the bottom of the velux is closer to the sliding doors rather than closer to the pitch roof. I’m struggling to decide what colour aluminium windows to choose. We plan to replace all our windows and doors with aluminium flush casement ones (veering towards either Origin or Stellar windows at the moment), but can only afford to replace the rear of the house for time being. The style of each window would be similar to now with a top opener/skylight, but below that a 50/50 split casement window (since we're replacing, we now have to have an opening that meets fire safety requirements). Our house is pebble dash and currently painted magnolia which I hate. The plan is to repaint the render white as that is in keeping with the rest of the street and my other half is not keen on a coloured render. I think however that white windows with white render would just “disappear” and as our house has little in the way of architectural features back or front, the window style is the only way we can add any character. We've rejected modern grey windows as we think they may date, but have looked at both black frames, black frames with a white opening casement (window) and less dramatically white windows and frames with a black sill. The house is 1920s so incorporating black into the look would be in keeping. I’ve attached photos of the rear of our house, plus examples of all the ideas above that I’ve found online. (ignore the window features like leaded lights etc, these examples are just for the colours of the frames/window and sills). Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated. I've attached a photo of the front of our house as well for info, although we don't plan to replace these windows for a year or so. On a separate note, we plan to enlarge the window in the single storey rear extension on the bottom right of the photo, by dropping the sill down so that we can have a window seat inside overlooking our garden as it's a lovely spot for reading/relaxing. I’d like it to be a fixed frame window without any openers (we have French doors on the side of the extension and we never use the current top openers in the window anyway) but I wonder if it would look odd given the rest of the windows will have top openers or dummy ones. Or is it better to just go for it and make a statement with a large fixed frame feature window? Would welcome some advice on this too. Thanks

Hi Ellie, that's why I want the back door and the fixed window to match, in height/width, so not disjointed like you see. It was going to be completely taken out & french doors added. Now I'm planning that the door & 'window' to be side by side but with the soil stack part of the wall remaining in between, but one will be the back door the other fixed. The plan is to have them both just completely glazed not a half n half door like it is currently.

Hi again & thanks for all the advice/opinions so far. We are thinking of all vertical lines with the windows now, mainly because it appears easier on the eye. Hopefully we won’t miss the small openers too much. Downstairs will be sliders for the window & doors. Can anyone help with frame colour? If we stick with the brown brick (which I find dreary/dark tbh & is very marked/damaged) then we’d go with light window frames. My preference would be off white or a similar pale neutral. However, the front windows aren’t being replaced so will stay pure white for now. The soffits & fascias are white. The other half of our semi next door is white. How would this work - would we need to change fascias to a different colour so as to link the white & off white? The other option is to paint or render or clad the rear of the existing house to disguise the old brick. This could possibly allow us to venture into a different colour for the windows & doors at the back, maybe pale olive green or similar. Is this a no no when part of a semi detached building? Should we retain the same look as our other half, even if it is dated? Any advice much appreciated. Really want to brighten the house up but without making it stick out like a sore thumb as it’s semi rural here with a lot of mixed housing stock (mostly character builds).
