Thanks Isidora. It's the discussion of the finer details which helps actually ! I think , having looked again in person, that the one larger D cup actually looks fine against the round knob...perhaps it is the 2 together which make the knob look a bit lost, as the eye sees so much metal on top then this small knob below. My partner also prefers the fancier D cup so I'm going to just fill the holes. You can only barely make out where the holes were on the big doors - you have to get up real close and scrutinize it, so I think my filling and sanding skills are actually pretty good. I was just trying to avoid more labour as the whole painting-the-cupboards was a bloody nightmare (I did them grey, didn't like it, so had to go around with white 3 times !) Thanks everyone for the input, it has helped me to clarify things.

Also, top tip, folks! If installing an island with plumbing/electrics in it, make sure you have an access panel somewhere to get to them - especially for the plumbing. I speak from bitter experience in the last house. This is a particular problem with Belfast sinks mounted, you guessed it, under a stone worktop, meaning you can't easily take the sink out. I had this in my old house - learned my lesson the hard way, A bad situation when your dishwasher or waste disposal unit are leaking or need replacing, and you find out that there are a load of connections you need to get to that are hidden behind the sink. Even worse if that Belfast sink has an Insinkerator waste disposal plumbed into it and the dishwasher is plumbed into that - the bits you need to get to are directly behind the unit, and not easily reachable from the space in the cabinet under that sink, even if you cut out the back panel. Very awkward. So that stone worktop has to come off (not realistic) or you have to cut through a cabinet back or two with a jigsaw (better option by far - but you do it very carefully). Which is what I did - replacing the hacked up back panel with an access panel held in place by magnets, for the next time. Trust me, it's easier to do this at installation stage! This island is 90cm wide, and one side is the seating area, which is behind the row of front cabinets, which include sink, fridge, dishwasher etc. The whole kickpanel in the seating area will be mounted on a stud frame which has six metal threads installed, so that the panel (plywood, as we determined above) bolts to these six screws. Need access to the plumbing and drain? Drop the panel in minutes, and everything is in front of you and easily accessed...

Thanks guys, these are my latest attempts! Tani the 2 tall non-oven units are a tandem larder and a FF. so yes rinq they will need to open right to left so have changed it. The 2 lower cupboards in the tall oven units also need to open right to left as we will be keeping big kitchen stuff like the magimix in here and I don’t fancy carting it out of the cupboard and then having to manoeuvre my way around a door to get it onto the work surface in the corner! Now stuck what to do with the door for the corner base unit, just realised the door will have to open left to right so the handle/knob for that door will be right next to the handle/knob of the cupboard under the oven. I did quite like putting all knobs on the front side of the island rinq but I thought it looked a bit *too* knobby so I think vertical handles for the doors? Could also put these handles horizontally and centrally

Good for you Resh and it is great to see pieces of furniture being given a new breath of life. Personally I am not convinced by all of your finishes, but the techniques are spot on. I would however consider using more than one coat of finishing lacquer/paint especially when you start spraying. In our workshops we sand the paint through all of the processes, i.e. primer, first coat and then the final coat is buffed up to bring a sheen to the final finish. Depending on the quality of the piece of furniture we may well have a primer and then three coats and painting with sanding to each layer other than the final one. With regards to handles, etc., why not have a look at ebay as you often see old/used handles/knobs at very low cost. You can also check your local recycling centre as often these are salvaged from furniture that has been thrown away. Likewise you could also find pieces in the recycling centre that have been put to one side for re-sale at low prices. Other options to find handles/knobs are in bric a brac type shops., etc. I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.
