Old bathroom needs a revamp!

I hate my bathroom and really want to revamp it but I'm on a budget! Any ideas for fixes particularly anything I can do with the vast amount of mirror without pulling them all down and ideas for the horrible tiles would be appreciated! I can't afford to retile the whole thing and they go all the way up to the ceiling! Could I paint them? The bathroom gets quite steamy as it's very small so not sure what art would hold out! Help!

If you want to increase the sense of space in the room you could take a look at getting some extra storage to keep all of your spare toiletries and cleaning products out of your line of sight. Hopefully that would create a clutter-free and luxurious feel. IKEA (among others) sell "under sink storage units" which are designed to wrap around pedestal sinks and give you extra cupboard space so you could easily fit one of those in. I think IKEA does one for about £15.

As for livening up the mirrors and tiles, you could take a look at bathroom decals online to stick on top of them. At least something like that should survive in the steamy environment!

Hi Jessica, when you say you're on a budget, what budget do you have ? Also, what abilities do you possess with regards DIY?

I think i'd have a look at taking down the mirrors, as 1) you don't like them, 2) I'm guessing they're on fairly flat wall. Taking them down should not be difficult as they're only screwed on.

It should be easy to remove the tiles above the mirrors. You will obviously have to sand the walls in order to remove remnants of tile grout and you may need to fill them in places to get them back to smooth.

However, this would leave you with plain walls all around except for the bath / shower area. You can then paint and place a mirrored cabinet up for your bits and bobs, on the new tile free walls.

The bath shower area :- Tile paint will work, but just remember that unless you go for totally white, then you will also have to paint back the grout lines as the paint you use will cover those. In my own personal opinion it doesn't produce a great look. Tiles don't have to be expensive, but the better the budget the better the options.

Also, as i mentioned earlier, it also doesn't matter if you have a small budget if you've got a modicum of DIY ability.

Options:- Re-Tile? Use plain perspex sheeting available on line - fairly in expensive, quite easy to put up. ( you need to be able to use a Sealant gun for glueing the perspex to the tiled area and then for sealing around all the edges.

Replace the bath panel with wood to match the floor?

Replace the shower curtain rail with a glass door?

Just all hinges on budget and ability!

The first thing you need to do is create storage. If you change your pedestal sink for a vanity, there would be storage below for bottles and jars. Also, you have some space at the end of your shower. Have your local joiner make a shallow, tall cupboard right down to the tub to make it look built in. Finish it in an exterior paint to take the moisture from the shower. There are specialist paints for tiles. Forget B & Q. Go to your local decorators' merchants for advice and good quality paints. If the quantity of mirror is not to your taste, remove the one to the left of the toilet, however the wall would be recessed from the front of the tiles below and the only way to repair that would be to tile with the same size tiles, then paint them as well. Better to leave the mirror until you've done the tile painting. A glass shower screen, replacing the curtain, will make the room seem larger. Painting the tiles white would make the room clean and fresh and neutral. I'd leave the floor as is. Wood is warm visually and underfoot. Using some natural baskets for waste and for a planter would link to the floor. Warm the room up with brightly coloured towels and bathmat. Put up some colourful prints using double sided tape to stick to the tiles and the mirror.

Front hallway- I say save your money leave it up. Cost of removal is minor but you will likely have to move radiators and electrics and make good plasterwork and coving- I say protect another £1500 profit. Present the larger back reception as a living room and present the front reception as the dining room. Given that the bathroom is likely to go upstairs make the downstairs bathroom into a room to access the garden- I would present the kitchen as a kitchen/breakfast room with doors to see the garden as being able to see from the front door to the back garden should pay dividend.

Hi Vicky, I think painting the units will definitely make a difference to the kitchen before you have your extension done and that wont be expensive to do, a pastel colour maybe might look nice with the worktop and tiles? Also with the flooring in your bathroom, the cork i agree needs to be changed, you could look at a sheet vinyl which can be put on top of the cork but not give a perfect finish and it would have to be cut around the pedestal and tray which may be fiddly. Some less expensive tiles would work or a karndean effect flooring which can be stuck down, all those options shouldn't be to expensive to do. Hi Jessica,

You could completely transform the look of the bathroom fairly in expensively by using some specialist tile paint. This is from Ronseal and is designed for bathrooms, so you know you're unsafe hands:

A grey would look nice.

You could make the mirrors more attractive by surrounding them with some wood trim and painting them white.

Then invest in a few towels in a contrasting colour, and you're all set!
