engineered wood over underfloor heating!

can anyone advise whether there's a noticeable difference in how long it takes to warm up ufh under engineered wood compared to a high end laminate floor like Karndean or Amtico? we're considering both options but are concerned the engineered wood would take a lot longer to heat up the room as its much thicker than the laminate.

Try this link for information on different flooring types and their thermal conductivity. The Karndean / Amtico you mention are Vinyl floor tiles/planks so they are much thinner. However the sub floor preparation (Latex/Plyboard) also add further depth over your under floor heating system. If you choose to go for one of these products please check with your retailer that the flooring is compatible with your under floor heating system.

hi KR, engineered wood flooring is not just the best option is the only option with underfloor heating. Obviously you can use LVT and laminate or ceramic tiles or stone, but if you intended to buy real hardwood flooring, the you need to consider engineered planks only. Solid floors are not particularly popular these days because are unstable and tend to move due to room temperature and moisture variation. Underfloor heating will put quite a bit extra heat into your floor and solid boards will almost inevitably move. You always need to keep en eye on moisture level which should stay between 40 to 60% whilst most manufacturers suggest 27degrees C as the max floor temperature. When looking for my house which was very similar (concrete in one room, suspended in the other), I’ve been recommended once I have insulted between the joists, to install a structural chipboard floor with precut grooves (ThermRite Pro is what our supplier suggests) for the UFH and then your finished floor goes on top I’d intended to put oak boards on top of both as I already have them but everything online that I’ve read advises against using solid boards and instead to buy engineered boards. That seems like a big extra expense but one to consider.

The biggest question might be are you actually going to get the use out of it, my relative is an electrician and they had it put into their conservatory for their gran kids to play in their and after a bit just stopped using it as they had a radiator put in. If its not gonna get the use and theirs a chance of causing damage to the surrounding surfaces i would maybe leave it.
