Wall colour question

We have just knocked through the wall between the living and dining rooms to make an open space with the stair case in the middle. The only bit of big furniture we have is our sofa which is a pale greeny duck egg colour (see below). The walls are currently white but they need painting after the building work and we would prefer not to have white. Perhaps a couple of colours on different walls? We have wooden floors and a white wooden staircase.

Any suggestions would be very welcome!

I'm having the same conundrum at the moment! I'm leaning towards an off white on three walls and then a grey on the 4th wall which is where the staircase is. With accessories in blue and grey It's also important to consider which direction your room faces and amount of daylight.

hi there. looks like you have all the advice you need here. as we have done this several times, the final outcome really depends on what you and your neighbour decides. you can either do the above - erect a new wall and this becomes the new party wall. this is the ideal scenario as it means you can maximise the space within your new extension and also if the neighbour is planning to have an extension then he/she will use the same wall and contribute the cost of building the wall as and when they decide to do so. the other option, and this has happened is that the neighbour says that they do not want you to build a new wall and it must be left as it is. then yo have to build your wall inside the boundary existing wall. this of course takes up more space within the inside of your extension. you can handle this matter in two ways - either a friendly chat with your neighbour with the drawings and proposed favoured scheme. you would need a letter of agreement between the neighbour in question saying you would agree to cover any damages that could occur during the build caused by the extension and take a schedule of conditions (pictures of the neighbouring property inside - where the extension will be built). this is both you and your neighbour know the existing condition of the property before the build. the advantages is that this process takes less time but is less formal if you want to cover your backs completely and have the matter handled independently, then the best thing is to handle the matter with party wall surveyors (either you will just need one, or two depending on your neighbour). this would be a good idea perhaps especially if your neighbour is planning an extension. however the process can last up to 6 weeks easily, so if you are in a hurry to proceed this might not be the case. hope this helps and message us if you need more information.

Hi Jessica. I remember the room from before, it looks great. I think you have a few options. You could paint the cabinets in the same green but paint the walls behind in a shade of aubergine or grey (the tv will also blend in a bit more). You could also go for a light or darker shade of the green on the walls with perhaps the cabinet and shelves in a white with a green undertone. Or as said above paint the chimney breast in a different colour and keep the alcoves in the green. In terms of colours that work then obviously the aubergine or grey, you could also try a deep muted red or burnt orange for cushions etc. Gold or copper accents will also look good against the green.

Thanks all for your comments! And sorry Sonia but the island is full of pastel coloured houses, would make me feel a bit nauseous to come home to one every day (assuming we ever go out again). Husband has vetoed anything darker so Downpipe will probably stay, but like the idea of painting the external sashes the same. The more minimal the better, from our POV. In other news our proposed plywood floors are reportedly the first on the island, so we'll be making a statement if nothing else!

With whites, natural wood and neutral furniture, using blues and greens might be your best bet. The colours of nature are the easiest for the eye to perceive and using them against the neutral palette you already have going on, they will stand out enough without overwhelming you or create harsh contrast. They will bring a naturally calm touch of colour in your space and allow you to transform your environment.

I hope this little bit of colour theory tip helps you make your decisions easier.

Hi Lucy. It would be good if you can post a pic re feature walls and to know if you have curtains etc and whether you have fireplaces? I would go for a white but with a green undertone (try farrow and ball James White and then team it with a feature wall maybe in their vert de terre). I would add either duck egg or mauve for accessories with a darker shade of green. You could then consider another feature wall maybe in wallpaper picking up the duck egg/mauve with a green which should be easy to find.

This is all so helpful - thank you!!

I have attached photos below with the work still in progress. We are having a bannister put in of glass with a wooden handrail. We have curtains there now but we will replace these with white shutters. I've also included a couple of photos of the room from before we moved in (with wall in tact!) which shows the fireplace and built in book cases more clearly as you can't see this very well in my photo! (We don't have the rug and mirror that are in that photo, only need to work with the sofa)

It looks a lovely house, I must admit I quite like the white :) do you have any idea of style or colour scheme you want ie pastels, neutrals etc? Do you intend to do anything with the disused fireplace like add a surround or accessorise the recess? Picking up on what dulux said re the skirts you could paint the cornices 1 or 2 shades lighter than the wall ( keep the ceiling white), this will highlight them and make the room feel taller. I'd paint the bookcases in the wall colour. You could paint the living room chimney breast as a feature wall and then paper the dining end in either a texture or pattern. I would add a floor standing mirror on the long wall, either behind the sofa or in the dining end to make the room feel wider

I agree about the skirting boards, cornices and ceiling, to keep those lighter than the walls. There's so much going on architecturally, that I would probably paint all the walls in an off-white. Although I'd be tempted to paint the back wall, that leads to the garden, in a soft green/grey accent colour.
The leaning mirror is a fun idea. I do like a mirror on the fireplace too. And I would do a mantle on there.
If you keep the built ins next to the fireplace, beef up the shelves. And paint them in the wall colour.

Or you could paint the shelves the same colour as the skirting etc., then paint the back of the alcoves your accent colour.
