Odd shaped room!

Will someone please tell me how I furnish this rather unusual shaped room. This is a ground floor flat, I don't like too much clutter and like furniture to be practical. The one thing I don't like is that the living room and kitchen are all one room (I had to purchase rather quickly so this was an "it'll do" scenario). I can't change The structure but I can use furniture to break the room up. I don't have much of an imagination but I do believe I have good taste -I just need some ideas on what sort of things to buy and identify the central focus of the room. Any ideas would be hugely appreciated

Lovely furniture pieces and a lovely light room too. Hmm... how about turning the sofa around and creating the lounge area on this side of the room? I'd leave a little space between the wall and the sofa and put a table and a lamp there. Could the TV go where the antique desk is? Or next to it? I'd then put the chair in the opposite corner of the window recess, so that it faces the sofa. Pull it forward a little, so it's not so tucked into the corner. A floor lamp would be good with it and a small table.

I'd also add a rug to the lounge area, to pull it all together so to speak and to add some definition and cosiness to that area. You'd then have space for a small round dining table where the TV area currently is.

Do you think that layout could work?

Hi. I think you have to arrange it so there are two separately zoned areas - but it can look cohesive. You need flexibility and ample room to be able to walk around the furniture for access to the doors. Do you use the fireplace? Assuming you do, I would suggest an L-shaped couch with the L under the window to the left of the fireplace and the back of the couch in front of the french doors to the outside, built-in bookshelves/TV on the long wall to the right of the french doors, a large rug in front of the couch with coffee table, an armchair facing the couch on the other side of the fireplace and then a separate sitting area - two chairs and a little table - in front of the large window. If you have something to look at out there, have the chairs face out, if not, have them face in. If you keep all the furniture with a low profile and similar colour scheme and have the chairs and armchair easily moveable/slidable then you can pull all the furniture up together when you have large numbers of people sitting around the fireplace or watching the TV. Lamps can be added at the end, but probably one in the corner next to the smaller window and then one or two down the other end near the large window. Hi, I fully understand why you would like to keep the sofa there. Maybe the storage heater could go to the other side of the room, just onto the wall where the kitchen is behind (it is better next to a window to circulate the warm air) - I am not an expert but I think it is not that big and expensive job. Then you'll have all the wall to have a bookcase (not a too deep one maybe max. 30 cms I think) The sofa question is difficult: U shaped sofa is compact but takes up a lot of room (but many of you can watch tv comfortably). L shaped sofa with a small armchair is a bit more flexible option. I possibly would go with a sofa with one chaise (chaise is next to the future bookcase) and big soft footstool which can be a coffee table with a big wooden tray on it / just a footstool, or just a sofa with 2 chaises on both ends. I would not put too big patterned rugs or pillows as that would make the room crowded (I like the carpet as it is now) Maybe some coloured pillows... Some great comments so thanks guys. I adore hanging plants so I'll make sure to put a few in the kitchen, especially around the door. I plan on having wall shelves with plants on, too. I think the outdoor mirror seems like a great idea, we can reflect the neighbours plants from their garden (well, hopefully, funny angled wall outside)! We've put a long table in the kitchen so far, with a bench on one side and four chairs on the other (against the wall). This allows the light from the doors to run down the table. Surprisingly the flat is very bright despite fewer windows and the lower floor being lower-ground almost basement. I think I'll keep the bedroom downstairs for now as it's not a room I spend a lot of time in. For me the bedroom is purely a sleeping zone.

Nice room. As the seating area isn't wide I would choose a chair that doesn't visually fill the space like this rattan one which will also add texture. I'd move the white cube to where the bags are. I can't work out what's next to the black vase on the floor but I'd put it on the cube. Add some tall faux stems in the black vase. I don't think you need anything else on that wall, I'd just pull the floor lamp into the room more. I would however change your cushions to add both pattern and texture. Is there any colour in the room?

Wow! Thank you Carolina for taking the time to respond and help me. Some people with a similar shaped flat have indeed put the furniture where are you suggesting. Looking at your diagram the door into the living room is slightly wrong. The kitchen goes right the way round back to a flat wall running alongside where you have put the TV. Therefore where you have the furniture this is actually facing the door into the hallway and the little chair in front of the window ( which is a low down window) has a catflap in it and some rather lovely views so I wouldn't want to obscure the window. The chair has been carefully placed for the cat! to observe all the wildlife outside!! I completely agree about a rug this would help to soften the room up and maybe another small armchair. Pulling the sofa away from the wall and put inside table there is also something I have considered and I'm glad you suggested that. I love this Scandi look that John Lewis is promoting in their furniture brochure but I do feel it's a look that is short lived and more traditional furniture will survive fashion trends.

I'm extremely touched that you've taken the time to respond and include a diagram! And I will have a play with some of the dimensions in the room As suggested in your diagram. Thank you.

Hello!

Your kitchen would really benefit from an island to separate it from the living room ( and have a place for your bin!)

It would have to be a narrow one as not to encroached too much the kitchen space There are many ways you can create one, from diy to a re-purpose piece of furniture to an ikea hack...( They have 37cm deep cabinets) or even a tall console table you add a backing to.

You can also find the provenance of the kitchen from previous owners as it looks fairly new and get the island from the same source.
