Front door question - need help please
Hi everyone,
here is the drawing for our new front extension which is currently being built. On the photo which shows the glass triangle above the door, should this be glass or brick ? Can anyone recommend a style door also please. I live in a 1930,s semi.

PRO9 years agoTraditionally a lot of the 1930's houses used stained glass in the doors and surrounds. You could choose that look, if it ties in with the rest of the windows etc.
However, a modern twist on an old fashioned design and shape may be more suitable. You could even etch your door number in the glass above the door.This is probably the most versatile as it goes with a lot of windows, brick etc and of course you can have any colour front door.
PRO9 years agoMan About the House has the top door spot on for a 1930's door with the small glazed section at the top.
The top triangle section of glazing above the door would look great and would give you a lot of light. You could have it frosted with your door number on it like Man About The House suggested. You may want to add glazing bars to the large sections of glazing though and also to the windows for a more traditional look.

Comments (23)Hi Patrina The first door you picked it a nice merge of traditional and contemporary. It's more modern but the glazing bars across the side lights mirror the Georgian bars you have on the windows & it has traditional ironmongery, we think its a good statement door. We have also looked at some other options for you. The contemporary doors don't look out of place on your house but our favourite is the blue traditional door with narrow glazing bars as we feel this works best with your home. you could add a matching sidelight. Comments (18)Here you go - some pics of a dark green (F&B Studio Green on our door; we also had stained glass made as the original was missing and had been replaced with that chicken wire security glass) - as you can see the colour works with lighter brick. Not sure it would if our house was all red brick, rather than just being trimmed with it. But also thinking to put a bench in that area with storage, won’t use for shoes, but don’t know for what.. so confused. Is the bench a good idea at all? Comments (25)I would be inclined to have wall washing lights either side. Not sure about a canopy unless it is pitched like the existing porch roof with brick infill either side but otherwise kept open. Maybe stick with the lights first to see if that alone does the trick. Making the bed on the left the same shape as that on the right and repeating the planting would help to bring symmetry. I am not sure about the two tall Pom Pom shrubs in front of the windows. Sorry I cannot make out what they are. Could they be moved one at each corner of the house perhaps to make a full stop? Taking away some of the grass to extend the drive in front of the door would open up the entrance too. It is difficult to see on the photo but the grass seems to curve towards the door. It would be better if it followed the curve of the drive out and away from the door, basically an expansion of your step that seems to be a curve, and then return in front of the bed on the left in the photo. You could have a path here in front of the left bed in the same material as the drive. I know planting and reconfiguration of your drive wasn’t on your remit so I hope you don’t mind!...See More

9 years agoI too have a 1930's semi and wanted to keep that look for the front door. I chose a Rock door, the style was just what I was looking for and I love the colour.

- 9 years agoI can see I am outnumbered but I don't agree this triangle will look right. In addition I think it will be higher than the hall ceiling so won't work.
I would rather above the door is plain brickwork with a statement porch lantern.
I think the windows to the side of the door lend plenty of light to your hall although you should consider if you need security glass.
