Anyone got any good ideas for making an ex council house look cool?
Comments (61)I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . This is my kitchen, it is so much lighter and more space . The back board is the same as the work top , so no tiles to grout ....See MorePOLL: What do you use your guest room for?
Comments (29)As no-one stays anymore, I swapped my lounge with my spare room (flat). I now have a lovely square lounge just for TV and chats etc. My spare bed is in my new 'craft room' just in case but it is covered with paper, clay, frames, paint and records. I paint and listen to old rock and metal that I can shout along to!!!...See MorePaint colour ideas needed for study without any natural light
Comments (16)Another update - I managed to get it painted by the time hubby got home, but haven't put anything back yet. He was really chuffed. Thanks for all the suggestions and help so far. I decided to go with white. The grey colours just seemed to suck away the light when on the wall and I felt I either had to embrace the darkness or go whiteish. Decided to slow down and take my time choosing by chair and accessories, but will hopefully have another update once we've got stuff back in and bought some bits and bobs.Thinking of shades of green if there are any more suggestions. Also going to see if our local handyman / carpenter can quote for some shelves / doors to hide some of the clutter we will inevitably have to put back. Also hunting for a table lamp, magazine files / storage boxes, maybe some fake plants (no light!) and something to put the phone on or next to that will hide all those wires....See MorePlease help us with our kitchen layout/ reconfiguration, very stuck!
Comments (28)Thanks for your advice both of you. We live in England to answer your question Gabby. Is there a rule in Scotland that the aisles have to be 120cm and if so why ? Jonathan, I was kind of thinking we would want to use the island for eating meals on like we do now with our current kitchen table, but I guess if the DR is open to the kitchen then it wouldn't be a problem to take a few steps more to the dining room table (because we use it so infrequently at the moment I am finding that hard to visualise). I am going to post a better plan of our current kitchen and dining room (with the pantry taken out) and I am also going to post a photo looking out from the window in our dining room. I am wondering if we did turn the DR into our kitchen could we make the window ledge higher and put the units in an L-shape so we could put the sink in the window? (and still have space for an island) I know this goes against some of my earlier points, especially about being worried people would be able to look in at us/and would create a more goldfish bowl feeling but I am just playing around with ideas....See MoreThe Lighting Company
