Too much Greige!!!

We live in a new build with little to no personality, so 2 years ago we paneled the lounge which I love to make it feel cosy but something is lacking. The colour feels bland, the furniture just fade in to the walls. I'd like to paint the paneling a dark brown like F&B London Clay and the top a similar colour to the paneling as it is now (Elephants Breath). But my husband is concerned it will look too dark. but I say the furniture needs to stand out, the rooms 28 x 14 with south facing french windows and a north facing 3 x 5 window to the front. does anyone have any ideas??

Comments (80)Here in Oregon, we refer to a den as more of a manly, comfy room. Part office, part tv room. The family room is like a living room but with a tv. A living room is generally more formal and used for casual conversation. For a house that doesn't have a family and living room both, the words are interchangeable though, which can get confusing for people used to more formal living. We are fairly informal around here. I would assume drywall is like plasterboard. When houses are built, the framing goes in, filled with insulation on exterior walls, then all of the studs get covered with big sheets of drywall that then gets all the seems "taped" and smoothed and then texture is sprayed over it all, then paint. Drywall isn't used in all rooms, there is a special kind called green board used in bathrooms, which is mold resistant. Cement board is also used on any walls or floors where tile is being applied, like bathrooms or kitchens, which is also mold resistant. I am loving this subject! Comments (15)One either loves velvet or hates it, there isn't really a middle ground here. Colour and texture is everything - same piece in subtle, smooth tones can be absolutely spectacular, but change it to frenzy busy pattern in loud colours and you can end up with kitsch written all over it. It generally depends what you are aiming for and the room you want to use it in. I find velvet particularly good for classic and eclectic styles. Comments (27)Hi Martin, it wasn't full wrap-around. We extended 6sqm into the side, and then just added 0.6m to the entire length at the back. We retain one of the side walls to try to save money. However, in the end we went with someone recommended by a friend and it was a disaster as he under-quoted to get the job. In the end we spent nearly £65 including £3.5K on higher-spec flooring and £16K on a higher-spec kitchen. So, doing the maths, I'd say £47K was about right for the rest of the work minus kitchen and flooring. Hope that helps!...See MoreHelp, too much of a good thing: living room too large/too much light
Comments (18)Great apartment. I would agree with the previous comment about getting an interior designer on board, preferably one whom will pass on their trade discounts! I also agree with other comments re zoning, scale etc. I'd also decide what you want to do with the kitchen before looking at the rest of the room as it's a little awkward. I don't know if it would be possible to get a flue in the roof for a suspended log burner? Alternatively which I prefer (but would get a render done first!) is to have a double sided bioethanol fireplace finished in a polished plaster to add texture. I'm not sure what the 5 doors/panels are but could they be covered in a leather/shagreen leather again for texture and interest. You're lacking walls to add art so you could look at suspending double sided art from the ceiling (last pic just to give an idea!) or add sculptures on plinth/s or an art rug (if in budget Knots rugs do some fantastic ones). I'd also look at adding pendant lights. I'd also go for the same style blinds to what they have in place now. If you add lots of textures elsewhere then curtains aren't really needed and I'm not sure they'd enhance such a great feature. Perhaps look into solar window film to make the light more bearable and prevent fading? Does the balcony wrap around as potted plants would also add privacy?...See MoreRoxane Wiley

5 years agoHi ED, yes we did make a few changes along with the paint colour. I’d felt there was to much furniture so we changed the position of the TV with a mid century modern unit and used dark green and orange cushions for contrast, we changed the light fixtures. We had the olive green rug in another room, so just swapped them over, losing a couple of pieces of furniture was the key to a better flow. We also painted the fireplace with LA cotton white furniture paint. I would love to replace the sofa too!! With the one below ❤️
