Too much Greige!!!

We live in a new build with little to no personality, so 2 years ago we paneled the lounge which I love to make it feel cosy but something is lacking. The colour feels bland, the furniture just fade in to the walls. I'd like to paint the paneling a dark brown like F&B London Clay and the top a similar colour to the paneling as it is now (Elephants Breath). But my husband is concerned it will look too dark. but I say the furniture needs to stand out, the rooms 28 x 14 with south facing french windows and a north facing 3 x 5 window to the front. does anyone have any ideas??

Comments (84)Of course you can use any fancy wallpaper you want but I assumed the reason you were asking if it was "too much" was to avoid making an expenxive mistake. If you want to choose something that works vs something you like that doesn't work, that's your decision. The wallpaper is beautiful and would look lovely in a bedroom, dining room or powder room but not a den with heavy leather sofas. The wallpaper and sofas don't compliment each other. Please assert your femininity in another room--a den isn't supposed to be feminine. It would be like painting the walls pink. Find some magazines with pictures of rooms with leather sofas and notice how they've been accessorized. Comments (15)One either loves velvet or hates it, there isn't really a middle ground here. Colour and texture is everything - same piece in subtle, smooth tones can be absolutely spectacular, but change it to frenzy busy pattern in loud colours and you can end up with kitsch written all over it. It generally depends what you are aiming for and the room you want to use it in. I find velvet particularly good for classic and eclectic styles. Velvet, just like tweed is timeless and can really bring a design together or simply ruin in, so use it wisely "young Jedi's" ;) All being said, we love it!...See MoreToo Much Glass??
Comments (20)1. My house will become like a greenhouse and get extremely hot in the Summer. Yes, this is a real risk. As part of the Building Regulations package a SAP calculation will need to be completed and a separate sub-calculation that assesses heat gain also completed. If the heat gain calc doesn't pass you may have to introduce shading, use heat reflective solar control glass [usually tinted] or reduce the amount of glass. Regardless of what the calc says I'd recommend using solar control glass as it always gets hotter than you think. Another option to consider, assuming you are installing MVHR [mechanical ventilation with heat recovery], is summer shut off function so the heat exchanger is not used so cooler air introduced. 2. Would lose heat in the winter as glass may not be as efficient as brick. Shouldn't be a problem as new modern windows [possibly triple glazed?] are very energy efficient. Although not as good as walls, roofs etc. they are very good. The whole house average energy consumption is also calculated so if lots of glass other methods are used to compensate such as more insulation elsewhere or better heating / energy sources. 3. Security is compromised. Might be a problem so ensure all glazing, windows and doors are PAS 24 / Secured by Design standard for entire assembly, frames, locks and glass etc. Laminated security glass etc. High performance solar control glass with enhanced security performance = expensive glass etc. The design looks nice and would lend itself nicely to timber frame construction. The clock is a bargain, I need to forget my own personal taste and just fill the space I guess. I like the clocks its just it seems everyone seems to have them! 8 years ago- 8 years agoHi ED, yes we did make a few changes along with the paint colour. I’d felt there was to much furniture so we changed the position of the TV with a mid century modern unit and used dark green and orange cushions for contrast, we changed the light fixtures. We had the olive green rug in another room, so just swapped them over, losing a couple of pieces of furniture was the key to a better flow. We also painted the fireplace with LA cotton white furniture paint. I would love to replace the sofa too!! With the one below ❤️
