Which Canopy Extractor for 110 Range Cooker?

Hi all.

We're going to install a wide 110cm range cooker in our kitchen with an overmantel built around it (in a similar style to the example photo below). In terms of extraction, I believe the type of hood we need to integrate into an overmantel is a 'canopy hood' (sorry, I'm just learning!)

Does anybody have any recommendations for any decent canopy hoods suitable for this? I'm not sure whether or not we need an extractor that is the full 110cm width (?) or whether going down to something closer to 70cm would provide acceptable suction? Reason being, there seems to be a far more limited choice of canopy extractors the larger you go and the prices really jump (we're talking £600+ which seems excessive to me!).

I also notice that there seems to be quite a wide range of noise levels available, as well as suction capability - reviews for some products seem to suggest they're barely capable of suction at all. So it's all a bit of a minefield.

Sorry for rambling. As usual, I'm guessing it's a case of you get what you pay for, but can anyone recommend any specific canopy hoods that: 1. Are suitable for a large range cooker, 2. Have sufficient suction power, 3. Aren't deafeningly loud, 4. Don't cost thousands (to buy or run), 5. Provide good lighting. Not much then!

Just to add to this - my father in law suggests you could also just use a chimney style extractor and build the overmantle around it to integrate - opening up the product possibilities - any drawbacks to this Idea?

There are quite a few on the market at present.. I would check out faber.co.uk
"In-nova comfort" comes in 600 / 900 / 1200mm widths. Has removable grease filters that can be put in the dishwasher and Led lights.
Just make sure you use the correct 6" inch ducting

There's quite a difference in price range between the brands you mention. Rangemaster offer genuine value for money with regards to features and build quality at affordable prices, but then can't be compared to La Canche which are far more expensive and owners tend to either love them or hate them. Equally Brittania can reach the £3-4k range but the build quality is poor IMO, offering very little value for money. I think if you asked 20 different people, you would get 20 different answers as it is what they are used to and suits their budget. If you are looking at the £1-2k range, then you could do a lot worse than Rangemaster, if you are looking at the £3k-4k plus range, then I think you would be best placed to go and see a specialist retailer who can demonstrate the differences between the brands and you can see first hand where your money is being spent and if it suits the type of cooking you do.

Perhaps look for a ceiling extractor instead of a canopy-unit (to build into the canopy)? These often require less height and the pipe can be placed on the side (left, right, back). Some have only remote control, others have buttons too. But plenty of build-in/undermount units have the option to place the motor max.3m away from the unit (please do regard accessibility though). A 15cm pipe would be sufficient. If the canopy is wider then the stove, you could add two leds on either side of the extraxtor unit. They could have their own switch, but a good electrician (that works with kitchen appliances often) can hook them on the on-switch of the unit (but then you can only use them with the unit on). Sidenote: A recirculation unit needs to be installed together with an exteractor fan to remove moist from the home. We use them in modern homes that have ventilation systems. Yes a carpenter can do it. And the width matters less than the power. Look at the extraction rate, noise levels and make sure the hole in the wall for venting is as big as required in the user manual as most times builders favour 120mm holes but most extractors need 150mm to work fully. Also don’t forget to follow the safety instructions and place it the correct height above the hob.

Went for a Falcon built in extractor to match the Falcon range oven I also bought. Would highly recommend - more powerful than your typical home kitchen extractor. Really makes a difference.
