Professionally, the most I've spent on behalf of a client was £10,000 on an oil painting. Personally, my husband and I collected signed prints and etchings by Cecil Aldin, paying anywhere from £3.00 on a 2nd hand stall to £600.00 in a London gallery.

Regardless of the price, art should excite and delight you everytime you look at it.

I have 2 or 3 expensive paintings from a previous life, but most have been picked up

for pounds at auctions or 2nd hand.

I love coming across art that is not "by" anyone, as then it is not expensive.

I only ever buy what I truly love.

I love them all equally & have art everywhere . I love having a glass of wine & drinking them in ( the paintings & the wine !).

Most expensive - about 20 years ago we were spending Xmas/New Year in Italy with friends. We were driving around to some of the smaller towns. eating, drinking and taking everything in and had arrived in Florence for New Year. Our pensione in the back streets was opposite a local artist's studio/gallery. I fell in love with this gorgeous original bronze statue of a young woman called Shoku (although the sculptor was Italian his model was Japanese) and I ummed and ahhed as I'd never spent so much on one item before but ended up buying it. I had just received my bonus and knew if I didn't spend it on something it would just slowly get whittled away. It was 'only' £1000 but at the time it was a lot of money compared to my salary (about as much as the holiday itself). It's a stunning piece and and it was the first piece of original art that I purchased and still love it.

I buy various items, some costing as little as a few pounds/dollars, often when I am travelling but also maybe in a local charity shop or market. My main decision making criteria is that I love it! I also love that many of these pieces transport me back to where I bought them, a market in Havana, an interesting conversation with the artist in Sydney, women on a roadside in Kenya.

I exhibited once near a girl selling her own paintings and I really grew to love a triptych she was selling. It would often get boring during slow periods and I would walk around and look at the other art and talk to the artists. I liked this particular piece and the more I saw it the more I loved it so decided that if, by the end of the exhibition it hadn't sold, it was meant to be mine and I would buy it. Thankfully it didn't and I did buy it. I kept encouraging her to put her prices up and she did a bit but I insisted on paying her more as it was worth it.

I would also include pieces of furniture as art, I have a particular chair that I just love and have located where I can see it from the sofa rather than as a particularly practical place to sit because I love looking at it.

I realised some years ago that beauty is a really strong value for me and it shows up in so many ways. In mathematics they talk about 'an elegant solution'. This shows up in my home and in my business work, I cannot stand clunky solutions to problems, I like elegant/beautiful solutions and thankfully I am good at finding them.

When we got married we asked friends to contribute to our art fund instead of giving individual presents. So we were lucky enough to have a reasonable sum ringfenced to splash out on a painting we liked. It took some hunting, but we found it on an open studio art trail. It was the artist's flagship painting that year, a big abstract coastal landscape with lovely rich colours and movement.

Love the green man sculpture - I need more wall art for the basement wall that our flat looks out on to. Have plants/mirrors/small statue so far, but it's a vast space to try and fill to have an interesting view year round.

We're at the budget end of market, so max spend is around £100. We've got a mix of prints of artists I love (Joan Eardley way out of my budget!) prints by local artists, old book plates, and my young son's drawings. I get most prints professionally framed because it makes it look much more impressive.

I also frame collections of found items in old printer's trays - started as a personal thing, but I now sell on Etsy. These really add interest to a wall display/curio cabinet.

I usually go for really cheap, interesting photo's or watercolours but have been gifted some other beautiful pictures. A family friend gave me a pastel of a place we holidayed in France. My husband's sister was an artist and we have some of her work around our home.

I'd spend millions on art if I had millions spare....

Hello forzaitalia. Can I be your friend's friend, too???!!! And hello sianember. I'd spend millions, too. I had a wonderful few years when a friend owned an extremely good art gallery - every visit was a chance to buy and I often did but a lot more was out of reach. Oh for a lottery win.

Art Is so subjective, however as long as it reflects the individuals aspirations, passions, I believe its money well spent because of these aspects often it naturally enhances the interior decor to show the personalities of the home owners, A recent commission for a classic car enthusiast measuring 6ft 9 by 3ft was perfect for his Trophy come games Room.
