Curtain colour/pattern

Hello,

I have a south facing living room with a beige carpet, brown leather sofa, white fireplace surround and grey walls (Skimming Stone by F&B).

If you think that sounds like a lethal cocktail, you're right! But, for now, that's what I'm working with.

I need some pencil pleat curtains to use with the super stylish, plastic track above my bay window. Which colour/pattern would you choose? My cocktail needs a cherry. Budget is quite low.

I wouldn't put curtains but go for vertical blinds . The room looks quite dark and curtains might still cover too much of the side windows . With the blinds you could do away with the nets and still have privacy . They offer a huge range of textures and colours now so blinds don't have to be boring .

I think you're going to have to go Navy to match the sofa. Then you could try and get some co-ordinating cushions based on Navy and Cream to match the walls and curtains. Keep the red ones to go with the painting, which needs moving so that it's central to the sofa. Alternatively, if you can bear to part with the painting, get rid of the red completely, and then go with Navy and cream and put a large mirror over the sofa, maybe get a nice textured cream throw?

Hello Edwina, To make it all work you probably would be better off removing rather than adding things! Your room looks very busy, maybe try to remove some stuff and see if you like it, for instance, all the things under the tv? I like your sofa and carpet, they are neutral and a good base to work with. The curtains are a good match for the brick for the fireplace and the rug. And a lighter colour on the chimney would definitely go a long way in making the room lighter.

Hi I like the colour of the sofa and armchair. ITo make it look more stylish and cosy I would perhaps do the following Get curtains that match your sofa - Dunhelm Mill have some from £30 http://www.dunelm.com/product/grey-solar-blackout-eyelet-curtains-1000058807 Move the footstall/box by your French doors - do you need it in this room? We’d definitely recommend plains, patterns come in and out of fashion, whereas colour is timeless. Choosing a plains with a great texture also adds some sophistication. I’d go for oranges and yellows, they’ll really compliment the teal. This looks perfect for Roman blinds. You could go for almost any colour..... Teal and Aqua would look nice with brown and grey. Also pops of brighter citrus Colours for scatter cushions. And possibly an area rug, in front of the fireplace, including a bit of all the Colours you choose.

No curtains, and for me the only blinds should be roller. Why not go for something with a subtle shading - lavender? Then cushions in darker and lighter shades to tone.

Great, thank you so much for your advice. The main reason we were thinking of curtains was to keep the cost down. Do you think blinds will be expensive for a bay window? Any recommendations? :)

Blinds can be much cheaper than curtains - look at web-blinds.com. The problem with curtains in a bay is they take up so much space when drawn back, for style they need to be lined, ending up with a bulky mass. When you add up the material, lining, heading plus poles, blinds are very competitive, and look better!

Vertical blinds are very inexpensive but that is because they are no longer fashionable (bit 80s office). I'd pay a bit more for roman blinds which you can then tie in to your colour scheme.

Thank you! The colour scheme is somewhat accidental as we have to work with what we have (for now at least). Contrary to the terrible photo I took, the room is usually flooded with light so perhaps a real would look good (as suggested earlier). I'll have a look at blinds :)

There are loads of colour ways that you can jump in with that would be complementary. You just need to have a bit of a play and decide how much drama you would like at your window. You talk about cost as being a factor, and for the size of the window, I think you would find that blinds and curtains depending on your choice can come out at a similar sort of cost.

Also as you have a lovely bay window, you may want to consider dressing the edges with 'decorative' curtains, that are styled, but never pulled. And then go for blinds for functionality.

However - I would also consider the heating in your house. As a general rule, curtains retain more heat than blinds.

If you want to discuss colours etc further, I'd be more than happy to have a chat.

And please post what you go with in the end. I would love to see the finished article.

I agree with some of the people on here, go with vertical blinds to let in light and keep the budget low.

Rachel Oakes ,.& Lucy , I'm sorry to disagree but vertical blinds are no longer seen as " 80's "office . You can find them in a huge range of colours , metallic s & textures . Along with shutters they are in fact quite popular , giving a minimalist clean look . I used to think they were boring until I saw what was in my local showroom . Cost also depends on whether you can buy ready made to fit your window , if not bespoke will be more expensive though there will be more choice .
