Window fitting error - Please help!

We had our 4.7m window fitted today, and the window company ordered the panels wrong. We have the choice of correcting this or keeping what's fitted. Could you please help by giving your opinion on which way to go? Eternally grateful to the community as ever!

Look like I am on my own..... I prefer the central post- I think the large window looks like a mistake as it doesn't match what is below

When I first saw your post I was using my phone; having now looked at your photo on my laptop I can see that my bay is a bit different to yours! The shutters were around £1200 (can't be more accurate as I was having some blinds from the supplier as well so did a bit of a deal). The order time was 12 weeks but they were actually fitted in 10. The room is east facing and I love the way the light comes through the shutters in the mornings.

Thanks for the above comments. It is basically a large picture window so a glazing bar or opening section would spoil the appearance. I don’t think a trickle vent would be sufficient. A tilt and turn would be ideal but it is such a large window that I understand it would be difficult to source and prohibitively expensive. If this is not an option for us then I wondered if there was any sort of manual or electric ventilator which could be inserted/incorporated into the window. We just want something that looks smart. The window and French doors are aluminium in anthracite. Hope that clarifies as is probably obvious I don’t understand the technicalities 🙄. Really appreciating all your responses though 😊

Hi, It is a tricky one :( Do you want curtains? If so, a small track rail (like what is there at the moment) it probably best as it is slim and allow curtains to be out of the way of the door hinges when open. Otherwise, for a more minimalist look, you could get « clip on » blinds. I'll have to get on the band wagon and chip in on how amazing that view is, however completely get the need for some proper shut eye in the evening. I see this has been recommended a few times and I could agree that given the width of your window frame it would be possible to install a channel in which a block out roller blind can glide in and effectively stop any light bleed around the edges. Often these would have to be motorised as the chain isn't available due to the track, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I'm OCD about the difference in the thickness of the frame without a dummy opening. Agree that the centre frame missing is probably a bonus.

Oh dear you are all keeping me in the middle on this... :D

I think we will paint the house this weekend then decide, but maybe what we need is the full pane being replaced with a dummy opener?

I think the mock up looks better - more like a complete window. When I saw your photo of what you have, my first thought was 'why have they stacked windows up like that?' as it looks like separate parts rather than the 'whole' window you have in the mock up.

Mock up gets my vote, looks bit unbalanced without the centre post as frame looks lot thinner than what is below.

Also, if you are going to have shutters on that top window they will presumably be pair meeting in middle so that would have a centre 'post' around same width as the one you would have had on the window. This will reduce light in any case even if you keep what you have as you would rarely open the shutter doors, you just open the louvres. We have some high shutters on a shaped bedroom window and never open the shutter doors as such, so if you are keeping due to light would just think about impact of the shutters.

Just get some white tape....see if it makes much difference

Rip it off later if you want one piece of glass!!

Keep it if you do or get some aluminium stuck on it

Its just for aesthetics , doesn't open .

Different if it was suppose to open....

Thanks for those last 2 comments! Will try the white tape suggestion.

Re shutters, they will only be on the lower doors the top windows get blinds which we can raise if we want to see the sky whilst keeping the lower shutters closed :)

Hi,

I think the top window looks slightly misplaced without a central panel running through, if it was the middle section missing the bar, it would have looked a bit more in proportion.

But, before any drastic changes I'd probably live with it, see if you like it and try the above ideas of tape so you actually know the potential difference if a bar is added.

Hi, I was going to suggest using a graffix company to lazer cut and apply some white vinyl to the glass inside and out!
That way you get the effect you want and if you don't like it you can always remove it..

Great. Yes we will try the tape which will simulate the effect adding more frame will have.

If you keep it..is it cheaper as they didn't use two windows etc ?

If you don't keep it will they fix it on site or rip the whole thing out?

They have acknowledged their stuff up ?

Yes they have apologised and offered to fix it as a retrofit on site. The frame can stay and they can put the upright plus blanks in place. No talk about refund but I expect it to be minimal if any... priority is to make the right decision so cost is not so much of an issue for us :)

What bothers me is that each section of the window has different frame thicknesses. The frames just look very thick to me and block so much light. It's not just a case of a white bar down the middle if you want the top panel to match, it needs framing around the edge too.
I'm not sure if you can reach the opening panels in the middle of the window, but there's a lot of framing around those. Could you not just have a split top panel above the doors?

Hi Victoria, thanks for your thoughts. The purpose of the dummy openers is so that this problem is resolved. Essentially they will follow the same lines as those below it... posting pics next so you can see

I prefer with centre partition however if you are having a blind there you will never notice it either way from the outside. I think I would get it put right though.

I have replaced 19 windows in my house and feel your pain. However, I think it looks really good without the central bar, very contemporary. I would leave it.

@Victoria - wow! Just realised what you are saying... the panes of glass are different sizes! Ok we need to get that fixed also

I prefer the error. The mock up reminds me of a church. The windows have what looks like a cross.

I would hate the odd size windows, and the openers look bulky. Also the narrower frame at the top looks weird. I prefer the central bar, but I don't think it matters that much either way, but I think you should get the window company to fix the other errors.
They will obviously prefer you to accept what you've got, but it looks a bit of a mess if I'm honest. Even if you don't mind it, someone in the future might do- get the mistakes put right and you are covered.
If you decide you can't be doing with the upheaval of having them fixed, you should insist on a refund element, as it would cost them more to fix it, and it is their mistake.
Hope another opinion helps rather than hinders!!!

It all helps Maccabee :) thanks for your input.

Of course we are going through all this in our minds, but everyone's comments help work out a plan to move forward.

It's a big hassle in the building schedule, and will be an access issue soon when the scaffolding disappears, but I agree this needs to be corrected. This window is a feature of our design, so needs to be right or we will always be trying to ignore the fact it is wrong.

I am discussing the corrections and hope to have them all resolved quickly so we can get on with this unsettled time for us all.

Did you have to pay for the replacement or did the company re-do them for you/accept fault?

They accepted fault and corrected the error. They've been good but it was a bit of a schoolboy mistake to make. Happy it's sorted though!

You asked for something that was balanced and had symmetry. What you got was an easier solution. The first looks like a complete window with interesting fenestration, what you have looks like a patio door with a window light above. Stick to your plan, you will regret the compromise.
