Bay Window Insulation Advice/ Help please!

We’ve just had new timber sashes fitted in 4 different bays windows. Underneath the windows (internally) were horrible plastic/ chipboard panels, which we have nearly all removed and we’d now like to replace with new timber moulded panelling.

I’m trying to winter-proof our home and in this instance, I would like to insert a layer of insulation in between the brickwork and the new panelling. However I’m really unsure as to what type of insulation to use and if it simply can be placed next to the brickwork or if it needs a membrane of some kind in between the brickwork and insulation.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

There are numerous options, all with different costs and benefits. Here are some thoughts based on things I’ve done before.

If your final finish is going to be wood panelling then stud work infilled with rockwool insulation or kingspan thermal insulation board (or similar) is probably the way to go. The insulation boards do have a foil backing and therefore resist water penetration fairly well.

If there are damp issues then these should be resolved before insulating. Take the opportunity to sort out any pointing and then consider a treatment such as Bostik damp-proofer.

If your final finish is going to be plaster then an insulated plasterboard is a good option. It’s not cheap but combines insulation, a moisture barrier and plasterboard.

It’s also worth weighing up the cost and the time. Some of the cheaper options in terms of materials will be more labour intensive. Stud work and insulation is generally less expensive than insulated plasterboard but it takes longer to install.

Hiya, We always recommend making a feature of a bay window, especially in a living space. Choose 3 separate blinds that follow the windows - Roman blinds are a popular choice as they create a luxurious feel, though if you're overlooked you might like something with slats, like shutters as you suggest. Framing the window with dress curtains is a lovely addition too - as you mention, the close-in curtains can make the window feel smaller, so consider a wider curtain pole to make the most of the space and light. When I first saw your post I was using my phone; having now looked at your photo on my laptop I can see that my bay is a bit different to yours! The shutters were around £1200 (can't be more accurate as I was having some blinds from the supplier as well so did a bit of a deal). The order time was 12 weeks but they were actually fitted in 10. The room is east facing and I love the way the light comes through the shutters in the mornings.

No insulation on the plastierboard. And rads are fine. Problem is drafts aeound wall cavity (you can feel it when you remove a plug face). Extra layer of insulation would have dealt with this we think? but apparebtly not needed when xhanged to using blockwork for outer wall. Builder thinks it is draft from void underneath (floating floor) which we have access to. He thinks adding a layer of insulation to the bottom of the floor will help solve it. We dont know if block work is air tight? and if the void is a problem for the ventilation gap in the walls and air movement there.

I suggest replacing the glass unit, first find out the depth of the glass unit by simply remove the beading and measuring the glass then find a glazing company that will provide either a low U-value glazing unit something that is triple glazed with a type of gas like Argon or Krypton etc between the floats. replacing glass is relatively in expensive. Id also remove the trimming around the window and check for defciant insulating foam and replace the gaps. then replace the trim. Note when replacing the glass check packers are in the correct postions.
