Comments (47)Hi again Ramona! Thank you so much for your interest - you have to let me know if you're ever in Wales and let me buy you a drink! We haven't done anything to the room in the last week; a couple of friends came by and said they like it (and then moved promptly to the cinema room which is much more exciting). What we manage to do is actually decide on a design of the shelving/ cabinets going in the alcove; that in itself is a great achievement, as I always tend to like at least 2 totally different designs and then take forever to choose one. Anyway, below are two photos of the style we would like to have. I know you suggested no floating shelves; however I'm not ready to go all the way traditional - I've not grown up that much! I like the clean look in those photos and we would probably go with the black and white scheme. Also, I've decided to use the 'bulls eye' painting on top of the mantel, which would throw out the purple theme and bring a red-orange one! But that is why I prefer the background (walls, sofas) to be neutral - I can then play with different colour schemes without too much trouble, just new rugs and cushions and paintings and you have a completely new look! And that's why I think classic (not traditional, but classic) works best, you can always accessories with whatever's the current trend and then change easily when it becomes dated. I guess living in the UK made me adhere to their way of thinking (although I made an exception with the kitchen!) The other 'close contender' was this other photo - they also have the shutters we would be getting next week. Apart from the high gloss, that style looks more formal to me because the shelves are 'anchored' in the cabinet, not the walls. We haven't decide if we're going to paint the ceiling or not - I think you were right and it would create a bit of drama with the pendant - I guess we would decide after everything else is in place. Comments (15)I don't think it will work. Do you have to dry washing indoors? How about a nice condensing dryer? Even a rack over the bath is preferable to what you suggest. How about a free standing rack in front of the radiator when you go to bed at night? It is surprising how much stuff will dry over night like that. Ikea do a good rack that folds out and holds an awful lot. I used one whilst renovating a house and did all my drying like that, even stood it outside on a good day. Comments (4)How faithful to the period are you hoping to keep your renovation? Many homes from this time would have only had coving in "the good room" and as such it would be totally in keeping to leave the other rooms without. If you do go ahead and install I would definitely go with your plan of keeping the design simple and without too many curves (curves would be more in keeping in a Victorian style home). PRO9 years agoI do a 6" stacked crown all the time. It is perfect for 36" uppers on an 8' ceiling.

9 years ago- PRO9 years agoThis is a Sub Zero fridge enclosure getting trimmed out today. The ceiling ht is approximately 95.5" in this spot and 96.25" in other areas. Using the riser molding (which is what's shown here) will allow carpenter to put crown tight to ceiling without any awkward gaps. I've yet to find a home with level floors and ceilings. Oddly, newer construction tends to be worse than old.

This is what 6" of 2 piece stacked crown combined with 36"H wall cabinets looks like. We had plumbing pipes to hide on the range side as well. It is a shaped riser under the crown, designed for the height buildup needed.

Light and Bright in Collierville · More InfoSame 36" High wall cabinets and 8' ceilings. We used a 4 piece stacked molding here because the ceiling was badly out of level and needed major disguising. We used a backer molding at the top behind the crown/ceiling joint, a shaped riser, an applied bead molding, and the crown.

Thank you Linda, they all turned out beautifully. The molding our KD has picked out is a little more detailed but I don't think too much. It will be stacked with 2 other pieces. On picture 2 you said you needed to disguise the ceiling imperfections. How did you achieve that?
