Ceiling light quandry...

Hi. I'm hoping someone will give me advice and answer a question for me. I've recently had my ceiling replastered (got rid of some artex - yipee!). Unfortunately we didn't think to remove the light fittings which fit directly to the ceiling i.e. no plaster ceiling rose just the brass fitting itself. My new light unfortunately have a smaller chrome fitting (by around 5-8mm) so there'll be a gap (rough edges). I'm wondering about getting a ceiling rose but how then would I fit the light? Or should I just try and fill the gap in the ceiling? Just conscious if I fill it'll still be visible and if the rose is the option then where's good to get a contemporary/modern one? You could try somethng like this https://www.30-something.co.uk/chrome-ceiling-rose-and-hook-ring-item-520 which is a standard 100mm diameter.You don't say what the diameter of your new light is, perhaps you could post a foto and dimensions. Or google chrome ceiling rose and look on images.

I don't think the new one will attach to a plaster or polyurethane ceiling rose but am happy to be shown how. Otherwise wondering how to bridge the gap - the old fitting aperture is c. 110 mm diameter and the new light fitting is 100 mm (give or take a few mils). As you can see from the first pic the hole in the ceiling is a bit rough and not quite covered by the light fitting itself so any advice on how to remedy it would be extremely welcome. Thanks. Adele

Hi, Just though it may be worth a quick mention....we are having a sale. This is the perfect time to buy a new light, if you are still looking? Just thought of you and thought sale news may be helpful. I'd recommend looking at lights with chain suspensions as some lights are not suited to hanging from an angled ceiling. Round shapes are really good on angled ceilings as it doesn't have to line up with anything. @Ursa Pirjevec A free 30 min zoom call sounds beneficial, in case we've missed anything obvious! These are the plans the architect sent over as initial 'discussion starters', including options with & without extension: At the moment we've decided to not extend as we feel the existing space is adequate for us and we don't feel we need to spend the additional money on an extension (if we had limitless budget then it would be lovely to of course!). This is our current proposal, which we think works well: @Isobel Goodwin we're a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids), we don't host people all that often (but maybe that's because we haven't got the right space for it at the moment!). We did consider moving but have since decided against that and will make our current house better, so we'll be here for medium/long term. The footprint of the house is the same upstairs (4 bedrooms). Similar houses in the area haven't been extended, but a few have conservatories on the back.

Hi. Thanks for your reply, we are using this room as our new living room. I don’t want spotlight in here really and there will be no dining table lol. I’m stuck deciding on one large pendant in between the windows towards the top end of them, or 3 smaller ones more along the higher bit of the ceiling above the windows.

We got some lighting from B&Q (which I surprisingly liked), which has adjustable cables that get hidden in the bar, the bar gets fixed to the ceiling. https://www.diy.com/departments/harbour-studio-kachia-5-lamp-pendant-ceiling-light/5014838021613_BQ.prd I think something like that, with adjustable lengths, could work!

I think the easiest route is to take down the light (power off) pull the cable through to give you enough to play with, then clean up any rough surface and use one of the fibrous fillers or polyfilla plaster repair, sand down when dry and paint to match.

If you are concerned about not having something to screw to, before you fill the hole you can push a batten up through the hole and glue it down with filler ( apply it to the underside of the batten before inserting then filler side down pull it downward to make the filler adhere to the upper surface of the ceiling, mark where the batten will be to screw to .

Thanks Chris. I think that might be the best option. Not sure a plaster ceiling rose would work with this fitting. Just need to do the work rather than just cover it up. Appreciate it. Adele
