Worktop Help - Modern Kitchen Granite?

Hi All

I previously posted a question re my kitchen flooring which you guys helped me take our decision to go with tiles...as opposed to wood.

Next decision is Worktop, I was sold on quartz (snowy Ibiza silestone or similar).... But, my better half is in love with Granite, in particular Ivory Fantasy (attached pic)

I have my doubts about mixing granite with a modern kitchen (my hang up).. as I see granite as country cottage and traditional...

Having said that, we have seen the slab for the granite (attached pic) and its does not have the yellows and reds that I didn't like....

Granite is under budget, which is a positive... quartz is over!

It's a big and expensive decision, as ever your views welcomed.

Will the granite work with the modern look in the kitchen ?

Hi,

What sort of floor tiles are you using?

I think both worktops work well... The quartz worktop with the grey unit is tried and common combination and works effectively. The grey notes in the granite worktop compliments the units whilst the beigy colours add warmth...

I like the second top better but also think the first would work.

Hi, I've now had quartz worktops fitted in a white with grey and mirror flecks (compact lactea) & attach photos. Cabinets are all done too. My next area is what to do for splashback behind the hob/under the extractor. I originally wanted to do red glass across the length of the wall, but we have had under unit lights fitted below the higher cabinets and at night I can change these to any colour I want. If I do red all across I won't get the effect of the lights. Not even sure red would go? The wooden chairs are going and will be replaced & I still need to choose my island lights (thinking 3 pendants hanging). Husband thinks stainless steel sheet behind hob. I'm not sure this will look right with dark glass hob under it & wonder if it is hard to look clean all the time. What ideas do you all have as you helped with the worktops. I also show the dining table and the new open lounge area (intend to put a rug down). We also still need to find wall lights.

Hi. Here's a pic of how it would look (similar anyway!). It depends if you want the sink to stand out or for the worktop to look seamless. As you're going for a shaker have you consider a butler or Belfast sink?

Hi We have fitted Honed Granite kitchen worktops for our customers previously and for those who want the look but don't want the extra up keep of a honed finish then we offer customers the Sensa Moak which is a black suede finished granite which is has a great sealant and easier to look after. One or two observations: Oak breathes, in as much as when wet it will expand and when dry it shrinks, that's why it is good for boat and barrel building, when wet the gaps close up and make it watertight. What that means for a worktop is that unless the wood is stabilised (soaked through with epoxy) it will expand and contract, if glued to the granite that means when expanding it will warp, staying still where the glue is and bending downward, not much but it will. Perhaps a less porous wood could be better, bamboo is good, then, if the counter top end is flush, you could screw and/or glue a stout batten of matching material to the end of the counter to add support ( extend it out past the front of the counter to ad support to the overhang) then glue the block to the granite with epoxy and screw up through the batten.

I would go for the quartz in this modern kitchen. I agree that granite is the traditional option.

On a purely aesthetic level the granite can definitely work in a modern kitchen. That stone is lovely so personally I would just choose the one you like the most.

I would add the following though - There is a big trend for quartz now that looks like marble - the main reason being that as a rule of thumb natural stone (not just marble) that is light in colour tends to be more porous than darker stone. Porous means possible stains and marks from things like oil and even water. Natural stone is sealed with a sealant to attempt to overcome this but it isn't always 100% successful. Quartz however doesn't need sealing so it tends to be easier to maintain but some brands may be slighlty more susceptible to chipping. Speak with your stone supplier for clarification to help you decide.
