Worktop Help - Modern Kitchen Granite?

Hi All

I previously posted a question re my kitchen flooring which you guys helped me take our decision to go with tiles...as opposed to wood.

Next decision is Worktop, I was sold on quartz (snowy Ibiza silestone or similar).... But, my better half is in love with Granite, in particular Ivory Fantasy (attached pic)

I have my doubts about mixing granite with a modern kitchen (my hang up).. as I see granite as country cottage and traditional...

Having said that, we have seen the slab for the granite (attached pic) and its does not have the yellows and reds that I didn't like....

Granite is under budget, which is a positive... quartz is over!

It's a big and expensive decision, as ever your views welcomed.

Will the granite work with the modern look in the kitchen ?

Hi,

What sort of floor tiles are you using?

I think both worktops work well... The quartz worktop with the grey unit is tried and common combination and works effectively. The grey notes in the granite worktop compliments the units whilst the beigy colours add warmth...

I like the second top better but also think the first would work.

It sounds like it's not what you were expecting and therefore I would suggest that it needs to be resolved by the suppliers - unless they told you in writing that this was likely to happen ?! Hope they can resolve it for you !

Hi Simon There is a host of colours to choose from in lighter shades it really depends on what other colours you like and how cream your units are. Dawn this is a design forum and the pics on Houzz come from a multitude of sources. The picture that you found should have indicated it's source and the firm that sells it. I searched for the product and this page has a link to a few companies that sell it, but as we can't see where you are, we can't advise on those in your locale. solaris granite If i were you i'd google 'solaris granite' and then narrow it down to your area. If you look at images of it, it's actually a lot darker than you think. It's a dark beige with brown veins. Counteredge is a company on Houzz not part of the granite range. They sell Solaris Granite, which is the colour name you want. I think you might like this colour better - Ivory Fantasy it's readily available from a lot of companies:- It's light and airy with the peach tones that you wanted.

Hi The granite worktops seemed to have sorted themselves out with regular cleaning. I think the hard water was making them cloudy . I gave some areas a hard rub with a metal scouter and and a cream cleaner which has removed the deposits. I also clean them regularly with a dilute solution of distilled white vinegar sprayed on and then buffed with a soft lint free cloth. I hope this helps.

I would go for the quartz in this modern kitchen. I agree that granite is the traditional option.

On a purely aesthetic level the granite can definitely work in a modern kitchen. That stone is lovely so personally I would just choose the one you like the most.

I would add the following though - There is a big trend for quartz now that looks like marble - the main reason being that as a rule of thumb natural stone (not just marble) that is light in colour tends to be more porous than darker stone. Porous means possible stains and marks from things like oil and even water. Natural stone is sealed with a sealant to attempt to overcome this but it isn't always 100% successful. Quartz however doesn't need sealing so it tends to be easier to maintain but some brands may be slighlty more susceptible to chipping. Speak with your stone supplier for clarification to help you decide.
