Hello Emma, Please don't get rid of these... You can still have a really ultra modern interior in a period setting... In fact for example Victorian and Georgian period buildings look amazing with a modern look... It all just depends on what you choose. Also you may wish to make a feature of these by choosing really bold colours to enhance these features.. .. : ))

I guess it depends, among other things, on the style and period of the house. What period was it built?

In 1930’ ceiling to wall coving was rarely used, instead a picture rail was added to the wall a short distance below the ceiling. If you follow the bottom of the slope around the rest of the wall and add picture rail (use substitute deco rail if cannot find reclaimed original) so that the picture rail is one continuous line around the room and paint a lighter shade on the ceiling and slope than on the wall below, this will give the illusion of balance. Love 1930 houses.

I think if its the only room with coving then you can safely remove it so that it all looks continuous. It might make the ceiling look slightly higher too as it would elongate the walls a bit. If your house was Georgian, Victorian or Edwardian I would give you the opposite advice. To play devils advocate it's always easier to paint the walls a different colour to the ceiling if you have coving to stop against.
