I'm after some opinions before I potentially end up going through the ombudsman to raise a complaint.

Weve just had a gable end sunroom built and unfortunately are disappointed with the outcome specifically of the gable end window itself. We appointed a firm to design and build this for us, but unbeknownst to us, at the structural engineer stage some changes were made to install a huge fitch beam to provide horizontal structural support in order to meet strict new planning requirements in our area.

The company we have used did not tell us about this, and it was only at the stage of the beam having been installed that we saw how compromised the gable end window would end up being (and obviously by that stage it was way too late to do anything about it.)

We're really upset that the company didn't communicate any of this to us, and I simply don't find it acceptable. We've raised this with them, but their response is that their practice isn't to share engineers drawings (not inform them of any amendments made) with the customer - the customer sees the architects drawings only. This seems madness to me if the design will ultimately be compromised by the changes made, and in our case, had we known about this in advance we would have seriously considered amending our design to a standard hipp front as the gable end was costing us quite a lot more money.

I've asked for the company to formally address this failing in communication and provide an offer of compensation due to our disappointment with the end result but we seem to be hitting a brick wall. Am I being unreasonable?! Is this standard practice?
