Walnut effect porcelain tiles

We have just had these delivered for hallway, drawing room and kitchen. House is a new build but not laid them yet.
Panicking now as everyone says walnut hard to clean.
Has anyone got tiles like this, any tips? Both rooms get lots of sunlight so I’m worried all the dust will show up.

If you keep on top of it with a regular clean (vacuum suitable for hard floors and steam mop) I don't think it's any more difficult to maintain than other porcelain tiles ... it may show up muddy prints more so than say an oak shade but a door mat will minimise the marks spreading across the hallway.

Can you attach a photo? I'm not sure why walnut effect porcelain tiles would be harder to clean than any other porcelain tile - perhaps they mean the texture of the tile might be more difficult? Are they textured for wood effect? Or maybe the darker colour? Or do they have a polished/reflective finish?

I'd have said it depends what your priorities for the floor are. These tiles will prove an incredibly practical floor, dust can be controlled very easily with a quick swipe around of a microfibre cloth mop without any water. Or you can vacuum. Dirt will require a wet mop and more stubborn mess will need a spot clean with a brush. I think the advantage is that you CAN clean them to spotless, and quite easily too. Its not like having carpet in your hall, which does hide the dust and you can vacuum, but when they get dirty its a real problem. Tiles are harder wearing and, I think, easier to clean than a wood plank floor (although engineered wood is great). The downsides are breakages and the cold surface if you don't have underfloor heating. Having said that, if you do have a reflective polished finish in a dark colour this will definitely show up dust and dirt if you are not a regular cleaner. I have sand coloured (lighter) polished porcelain in my bathroom and that lasts about 4 days before it is desperate for a vacuum. But the same is true of wood floors, there are no fibres to catch all the dust and hair and stop it from floating around - I still wouldn't want carpets though. Hope that helps a bit :)

For a hallway + kitchen leading outside, porcelain tile (wood effect) is the more practical option. It handles dirt, water, and heavy traffic really well, and you won’t be worrying every time someone walks in with wet shoes. You’re right though, it can feel colder and harder underfoot. If you’ve got underfloor heating, that pretty much solves the “cold” issue, but it will still feel firmer than wood. Engineered wood will feel warmer and softer, and looks beautiful, but in that kind of space it does need a bit more care. Over time you can get wear near doors, and you’ll need to be mindful of moisture. If it were me, for a busy indoor-outdoor space in London, I’d probably go porcelain for durability, especially if you’ve got UFH. If comfort matters more and you don’t mind a bit of upkeep, then engineered wood is still a lovely choice. - Georgia from Flooring365.co.uk

Hi Vandana, although we agree with some points Minipie mentioned, but we think glossy marble in the house is just beautiful. Concerns that it feels cold can easily be solved by installing underfloor heating. And the fact that is glossy, we agree it can be slippery, but in the living room we presume you will have a nice big rug to make it cozy and non-slippery, but in the kitchen, that glossy finish will make it much easier to clean the floor. Hi Suzanne, yes, I have done this, but sadly can’t find a photograph of it! it was in a new build in a long narrow room where the shower was at the end so I tiled the whole floor including the shower try and carried the tiles up the back wall of the shower, it worked really well as the ’planks’ added visual width to the room.

We have our open plan kitchen/dining/living room in wood effect tiles and the front sitting room in real wood. I wouldn’t want a cosy sitting room to be tiled in the UK, personally. UFH is great but doesn’t quite compensate for the look and feel of a naturally warmer surface and also you can’t use thick rugs without compromising the UFH effectiveness. Equally, I’m so glad we didn’t put real wood in our main room, given the amount that gets dropped on it. Hallway is also tiled, again wood would have got trashed there.

Wow comprehensive answers thank you. Looks like I’m going to have to get cleaning. The tiles are Matt finish but reflect light from the window (hubby laid some down quickly so we could see what they look like). Not too worried about dirt as such, more the reflection of dust as I hardly ever dust !!!!
